Many of the systems have since come back on line, but some locations are still asking people to use local numbers instead of 911, so as not to overload the line.

At the same time, there’s been a major Microsoft system outage, according to NBC.

On a status page for its cloud services, the software giant acknowledged a widespread systems issue and said “Any user may experience access problems for Microsoft 365 services.” (The city government of Microsoft’s own hometown of Redmond, Washington said municipal phones were down due to the company’s outage.)

The Microsoft outage prevented users from accessing some of the company’s most widely used services, including Office.com, Outlook.com, and Teams. Some of the problem has since resolved, although some on the west coast are still suffering issues.

On top of that, Universal Health Services, one of the nation’s largest health care providers, has been suffering a massive cyberattack since Sunday, knocking them offline and crippling operations in many of their hospitals with their computers down across their systems. They have 26 acute care hospitals, 328 behavioral health facilities and 42 outpatient facilities across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.K.

It’s unclear if the various things are related yet.

Good thing I’m not paranoid or I might start to believe crazy ideas. Like, maybe this was a test, or a proof of capability that someone could take down 911. That is, before certain parties committed to other courses of action. Things we may not see until early November...

Amazon AWS has excellent failover options.

It’s the best cloud solution to build on.

There was supposed to be a major solar storm today, causing the Aurora Borealis to be seen in northern states. It is possible that the widespread 911 outages were caused by the storm.

Solar storms can be serious business.

Are the 911 systems all linked nation-wide?

I had no idea that all the 911 call systems were connected. I always assumed each 911 center was connected to the local switching area and were separate. I see no possible reason they should be interconnected since each 911 center only handles their immediate area.

Regardless of how or why this should be a wake up call.

If you can knock out so many 911 centers by just attacking one location then things need to change.

Can anyone in the know chip in with info.

If there is a neighborhood power outage do not the laws tell the phone companies that 911 access must continue to operate?

I believe old school laws required landline telco companies to continue to provide a dialtone for 911 calls. For like 4 hours minimum.

Anybody know ?
