Donald Trump Should Not Bother with A Presidential Library
American Thinker ^ | 09/26/2020 | Charles Ortel

Posted on 09/26/2020 8:32:32 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Win or lose on Nov. 3, 2020, Donald Trump can set an excellent example by letting the National Archives retain and later provide access to all records created or received during his tenure as president of the United States. Thereafter, citizens and scholars can study these presidential records. After all, they are our property, and not that of any single president.

Unlike all presidents in office from 1955 onwards (when the Presidential Libraries Act was signed into law), Donald Trump entered the White House with a vast fortune, and a track record promoting and developing business ventures inside and outside the United States. Given his accomplishments as president, he and his family will only have more substantial profit-making opportunities when he leaves the White House.

The Trump family will later only be hurt, possibly grievously from a financial point of view, if they simultaneously get involved with a presidential library. Loved by many, but hated by denizens of the still lubricated deep state swamp, he will be relentlessly pursued by the very people who have let the Clinton family exploit their purported charity for personal and political gain since Oct. 23,1997.

Why?

Though the Clintons and other dynastic political families including the Bush and Obama clans profess otherwise, presidential libraries are public charities -- these are supposed to be governed by directors or trustees who are broadly representative of the public at large, and certainly not blind supporters of a president. These entities may not push or oppose a political candidate, nor may they promote or block legislation. Moreover, public charities may not, during their entire life create more than an insubstantial amount of "private gain" in total through their operation.

I was under the impression that library employees were Federal employees? I’ve been only to the Gerald Ford library in Ann Arbor.

He definitely should have a museum and library right there in Central Florida, something that can keep the contents safe from a major hurricane or water damage.

The only museum in the SouthEast is the Carter Museum in Atlanta quite far away and dedicated to a failed president.

I think the author is telling Trump to take the Jefferson approach.

When Jefferson died, he didn't want his presidency or his work in government be listed in his remembrance or tombstone.

An excellent opportunity for Trump to break a foolish and wasteful precedent.

We know that Joe Biden, if elected, wouldn't do this. He's already set up his personal library at the University of Delaware who is assigned the role of running interference and keeping all the embarrassing things out of the public eye.

Always thought, considering how rich he was, the Clinton Library should have been at least a double-wide.

Like his wife.

I like much of what is written on American Thinker. I read the posts daily. But I have to scratch my head on this article. While innocuous, isn’t there something more pertinent to write about six weeks prior to an election? I could care less about Presidential libraries, although I have been to the only one worthy of visiting in Simi Valley.

Clinton’s library does look like a double wide.

I’ve always considered presidential libraries to be a weird tradition. I’m a museum junky but I’ve never been to one, and had no interest.

It's a single-wide.

The whole Library thing is a scam. The documents are public record—let the archive deal with them.

A museum is a different story. I don’t care who runs it—but if its not run by someone with a vested interest, it will only show kids in cages and KKK suits from Charlottesville.

And we do not want that.

We lived about 1/2 mile from the Reagan Library and would walk up once in a while.

There was a difference in atmosphere from before his death to after his death when lib Nancy had more input. The exhibits didn’t change much, but the events and speakers were more liberal.

When Teddy Kennedy spoke there I stood on the corner with a sign mentioning “murderer”, “traitor”, etc. When Nancy’s car drove by she wasn’t happy. Even other protesters walked from my corner to other corners. LOL!

President Trump should build a Presidential library simply to prove that he was able to get elected, serve two terms, and then build and then use a presidential library in less time than it takes an incompetent like Obama to even select a site.

Naw,,,,he needs to build his Library with his own money on private land. There is no need for him to partner with a University as the Bushes did. Let it stand alone, just like he’s done. Symbolism Counts.

Just add a Trump Wing to the Reagan Library and call it a day.

I've never been to a presidential library. Are they worth the effort to go see?

The closest one to me appears to be FDR's library in Hyde Park, NY. About an hour trip away. Not my favorite president but might be interesting as I'm a big WW2 history buff.
