It started out as a story about a police officer who was ambushed in small-town Louisiana.
But within days, the tale unraveled. The officer had shot himself, his department said.
At 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, Police Officer John Michael Goulart Jr. radioed in to the Pineville Police Department that he needed help.
He said that he had been fired upon by an unknown assailant as he was getting out of his patrol car at a strip mall in Pineville, a Louisiana city of 16,000 people that lies about 100 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. “A Great Place to Call Home,” reads a sign on Main Street.

What legal/pd disciplinary action was he facing?

This is old news, months old. Why is the NYT posting it now?
In these times when we’re truing to help police with their reputation, I think the electric chair is the least appropriate punishment.
To constantly stir up the populace.

A cop shooting himself causing his fellow officers to conduct a manhunt for the person that shot him does tend to stir up the populace.
The NYT reporting the story about a cop doing this would surly stir up agitation since this cop faked an assault then folks will think how many other assaults reported are fake.
Maybe the cop shooting himself and claiming he was shot by someone else stirred up the agitation.
And the NYT reported it hoping .....
I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to retire on a disability package from “PTSD”...
