Collins needs Maine Republican voter support.
Profiles in Courage???Not!
Absolutely they should abstain. Theres a substantial difference between being a conscientious objector in a war and being one who takes up arms with the enemy and opens fire on your side.
RE: Collins needs Maine Republican voter support.
Yes, but how numerous are they?
“Before election day” is noteworthy.
But should litigants have to wait an extra month for their decisions?
She wont get it sitting on the fence. And she wont get it voting no.
Independence and moderation doesn't win elections. Sorry. Firm convictions and beliefs and strong support for them wins elections. She's going to lose unless she does something to help conservative Republicans support her, abstaining is a possibility as it is in effect a vote of support.
If these female RINOs abstain, that leaves Romney as the wildcard. Let’s be pessimistic and assume that his hatred for Trump is greater than his love for country (not an unrealistic assumption)... that makes the confirmation a 50-50 split since Republicans control the senate 53-47.
This leaves Mike Pence as the tie breaker.
Abortion is a non-issue.
Abortions will always be available in CA and NY.
Enough to help her win or lose. She needs to act like a Republican and support her party.
Always the usual suspects. If they aren’t going to support Republican platforms and a Republican president then they need to change their party affiliation.
Better yet would be a no show for the vote.
But if 3 Republicans abstain, that would leave the vote at 50 - 47 and the nominee would be confirmed.
The author of this article didn’t explain the difference between abstaining and voting no. I guess abstaining is not the same as voting no? In other words if they abstain, then there are only 98 votes and only 49 are needed for confirmation?

+++++
Indeed. I and a few others have been preaching this idea to the Freepers since Saturday. My view is we could have 6 GOP Senators abstain with Pence breaking a 47-47 tie.
The question needs to be put to them - Why do you think it is OK for you not to do your job that you were elected to do?
why can’t they confirm him/her after the election, and before the new congress takes over?
Not supporting a qualified woman is pathetic, not sure how any GOP voters would support either of these two.
If it is the “plurality of the Senators voting” and all cast a vote -including abstentions- the decision will be based on 51 votes for or against.
Abstentions are votes and do not get removed from the total.
