How's this for weird? If you like to cook, somehow you can't go to the store to get a spice container of paprika anymore.

That's because there isn't any, the shelves are bare.

Lot of people are noticing these days. Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner pointed it out here and others chimed in:

I grow my own paprika peppers, dehydrate them and then grind them into powder.
Very good stuff.

“We can’t find onion powder either.”

I have plenty. Two cans which now have onion concrete in them.

If you want to buy a pound, or so, you get far better $/oz if you buy at Amazon:

I switched to Bere Bere after developing a taste for it from my old girlfriend. I like a little heat with my red spice. Goes great in pasta, BBQ, chicken, pork, stew, anything really.

Most people have way more spices they will ever need in their cabinets. The spices only last a year or so before they start losing their punch. Tumeric, tarragon, lemon zest, dill seed, caraway, thyme, the list goes on and on.

About every five years, I throw everything out and start rebuilding the spice cabinet from scratch.

Stores around us still are only let customers buy more than two TPs at a time. You would think after 6 months they would be back to normal.

That is all I’ve ever used Paprika for. Until I saw one of Hubby’s firefighter crew dumping Pappy’s on some boiled eggs. So I tried it.....soooooo good. Now that’s all I use.

I only use it for color. As far as I can tell it has no taste. Use Cayenne instead. Same color - and you will know it’s there!

Killer Hungarian Goulash recipe
For EACH pound of cubed chuck roast:
1 lb onions, rough chop
1 tbl Hungarian paprika. Yes it’s a lot. Don’t skimp! Must use Hungarian paprika
1 can of beef broth

Brown cubed beef in olive oil. Sauté onion until clear. Mix everything together in large pot and cook on low heat for 6 hours. Onions break down and give you wonderful thickened gravy.

Serve over noodles, spaetzle, riced cauliflower, rice or mashed potatoes or eat out of pot with a serving spoon!

I get most of my spices at Trader Joe these days. Used to get Costco-size, but after the kids moved out, we cook less now.

What black magik spells require paprika?

Mashed potatoes with way too much butter, salt, black pepper and well coated with paprika is magic enough for me.

I'm not sure what this story is all about, I just purchased Smoked Paprika yesterday at the local Meijer. Plenty of it in stock along with regular Paprika too.

It was very difficult to find fresh Basil however. Had to go to three stores to finally find some for a marinara I made yesterday.
