If your words ans compassion are so great at deescalating situations, then you will have no need for the officer who can stand by a ways a way and watch, right?
I'm sure the naked 250 lb guy high as a kite on PCP wiht a knife will listen to your compassion as they connect said knife with you.

handle these folks so much better than the police do.

Yes. Shrinks and social workers are pretty brave when it comes to sending the police to involuntarily commit people or steal their children. Not so much bravery when they actually have to show up themselves.
