Why Giving Food Stamps to the Rich Is Not a Terrible Idea Every child in N.Y.C. public schools was given a $420 benefits card. The well-off should use theirs to support food banks. (NYT alert)

...

The cards, known as P-EBT (for Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer), are entirely legitimate. As it happened, every child enrolled in public school in New York City would receive one regardless of family income. The program, which delivers $880 million to New York State, was paid for by the federal government, a result of the economic relief package passed by Congress in the earliest phases of the coronavirus outbreak. The sum of $420 was meant to equal the cost of meals that a child would have received in the spring had school been open.

While the notion of people who have spent the past several months ordering stone fruit and oat milk from Whole Foods getting those things for free seems absurd, the exercise is not as wasteful as it appears. Advocates for food security are not outraged and in fact see the positives as vastly outweighing the negatives.

While many other municipalities and districts around the country had to apply for the benefit, New York City received it automatically because so many students in the school system — nearly three-quarters — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch according to federal poverty guidelines. (And since 2017, and the expansion of free lunch in city schools, all students can receive it anyway.)

Even if the state had wanted to deliver the P-EBT cards only to needy families — excluding, for example, those with six-figure incomes and diverting those benefits to the poor to supplement them — it did not have the discretion to do so. The benefit was designed to be universal — always a much easier political sell.

If you are a parent on the Upper West Side or in Cobble Hill, you may be wondering if you can rightfully fill your Subzero fridge with groceries bought with food stamps.

Did the money become holy after being baptized in the waters of the Potomac? Couldn't New York have taxed its own citizens to get the money? Or would that have allowed the sheep to see that the “free” money is very expensive?

“The feds spend almost one billion dollars without batting an eye. “

A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you are talking real money.

Removes the stigma. Like these schools that enroll everybody in a free lunch program.

The Left always has a plan. Wish we did.

Just another reason, why I am extremely selective on the charities I donate to. Far too many tax dollars (mine and others) is spent unwisely and is essential a charity in and of itself. I’ll stick to veteran causes, and fellow employees that may need a hand when a bad situation arises.

Stigma is good. It should incentivize people to work their way out of bad life choices. People who are disabled or elderly and really need that support have no need for shame.

There are a lot of wealthy, successful people who were motivated out of their social strata by stigma. Like me. I've been poor. It sucks. I will do everything in my power to make sure it doesn't happen again!

According to the snap rules, you aren’t allowed to share the food benefits you receive with anybody else. If you live with others, you gave to have a separate storage area for food, and a fridge has to have a separate shelf for snap benefits cold food.

The federal government has been keeping many communities alive because of those benefits. Food, housing, agricultural help, hospitals, medical personnel, power companies...you name it. Think of all the industries necessary for the making of a pencil and you will have an idea of how much government (tax payers) benefit all communities. How many jobs would be lost without that assistance? Think about it.

Who came up with that ridiculous amount?

420 ??? Is that a joke?

Are they actively promoting using that money to by pot?

Are they hinting cannabis edibles for our kids?

Is this some sick joke by a ‘woke’ official?

Somebody should get fired for this.

Even if you don’t get the reference, MOST high school kids will get it, and a lot of moms will too.

The rich can give their benefits cards to their slaves as a Christmas present.
