Chinese Vaccine Plant Leaks Bacteria, Infects Thousands

Thousands of residents of the northwest Chinese city of Lanzhou have been diagnosed with brucellosis, a highly infectious bacterial disease after they were exposed to polluted air from a state pharmaceutical company late last year.

According to health authorities on Tuesday, 3,245 people have tested positive for Brucella bacteria antibodies out of 21,847 people tested so far in Lanzhou, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Local health authorities announced on December 26 that the Lanzhou Biopharmaceutical Plant, a unit of the state-run China Animal Husbandry Industry, “used expired sanitizers while producing Brucella vaccines between July 24 and August 20” last year. “This resulted in the bacteria entering the factory’s exhaust and infecting people nearby,” officials said, according to Beijing-based news site Caixin Global.

Brucellosis can affect almost any part of your body, including your reproductive system, liver, heart and central nervous system. Chronic brucellosis may cause complications in just one organ or throughout your body. Possible complications include: Infection of the heart's inner lining (endocarditis)

How long is brucellosis contagious? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), brucellosis is only weakly contagious because person-to-person spread of brucellosis is rare.

Two-drug regimen consisting of streptomycin and doxycycline (streptomycin for 2 to 3 weeks and doxycycline for 8 weeks) or gentamicin plus doxycycline (gentamicin for 5-7 days and doxycycline for 8 weeks) should be recommended as the treatment of choice for uncomplicated brucellosis.

Down on the dairy farm, when I was a kid, brucellosis was a highly feared disease. Among other things, it caused spontaneous abortions in cattle. This meant the loss of the calf, and the loss of that cow’s milk production because normal lactation was interrupted by the premature calving. It would also mean potential infection of the entire herd. Also known as Bangs Disease, a vaccine was developed, and all cattle were required to be vaccinated. If memory serves, I seem to recall that once the disease came to a farm, it could linger and lurk in the soil for years. Maybe decades.

Don’t think Bang’s lives in the soil for years. You may be thinking of anthrax. I have administered hundreds of the doses of vaccine to dairy cattle. Don’t recall it every being said it lives in the ground.

Roger that. It may have been local lore, caused by the dread of the disease among the farmers. I recall how fearful my parents were of infection of our herd.

Devastating disease. Still a big problem out here in the West where bison can share range with cattle.

I saw a “China has recovered, thanks to the government” posting on a bulletin board recently. The post came with pictures of happy people eating and playing in parks without masks. It was from a Brit working in China. It read like a cross between propaganda and a hostage forced-confession.

Thank you. Yes. The vaccine for Bang’s Disease only arrived in 1932(?) and I was born in 1939. So in those days it had not yet become “old hat”. Nerves were still on edge. I clearly remember my parents’ fears of it.
