Donald Trump Opposes National Mask Mandate During Pandemic: A Lot of People Don’t Want to Wear Masks

President Donald Trump on Tuesday repeated that he did not want to issue a national mask mandate during the coronavirus pandemic.

“There is, by the way, a lot of people don’t want to wear masks,” Trump said. “There are a lot of people that think the masks are not good.”

The president commented on masks after a voter from an ABC News town hall hosted by George Stephanopoulos asked him why he did not support a national mask mandate.

He recalled witnessing waiters serving at a restaurant touching their masks to adjust them and then touching the plates.

“The concept of a mask is good, but … you are constantly touching it, touching your face, touching plates,” he said. “There are people that don’t think masks are good.”

Trump recalled that former Vice President Joe Biden called for a national mask mandate during his convention speech, but backtracked on the idea.

“They checked out and they didn’t do it,” he said.

Trump also defended his initial response to the virus, despite complaints that he downplayed its deadly nature at the beginning of the crisis.

“I didn’t downplay it,” Trump said. “I actually, in many ways, I up-played it in terms of action.”

He argued that his decision to ban travel from China saved millions of lives, at a time when Democrats criticized the idea.

“I was so far ahead of my closing,” he said, noting that Biden was talking about the threat as exaggerated and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was calling for people to come visit Chinatown in San Francisco.

I watched today's press conference with the angry gal reporters shouting at Kayleigh saying Trump hates masks - they were all touching their masks and face - eeeaaauuu

I went to Hungtindton Pennsylvania around July 11 for a huge family reunion, two months later and even though I was sick for four days with COVID I only was sick more than a month later. So I didn’t get it most likely from there. No one else out of the 30 plus people did either. And even there in Central PA, masks were recommended instead of required, and my mother in law and step father in law are both cancer survivors.

How many times have you -- or anyone for that matter -- seen a person sneeze or cough into their mask ... the face diaper's primary purpose.

The only time I saw someone sneeze while wearing a mask, they lifted up the mask to sneeze. Can't blame them for doing that ... who'd want to continue wearing a mask they just unloaded into? (Although I know the type of person who would ... a Depends-wearer who, no matter what happens, only removes it at the end of the day. Now that visual is a definite "eeeaaauuu"!)

Not just the virus, but you could also have an accumulation of mold and fungi along with re-inhaling whatever virus or bacteria that you coughed up.

Not necessarily.

Now, if you are seeing this out on the open road, 20 miles between stops, I might agree, depending on the mask worn.

Since handling a mask once worn incurs added risk, I do as little putting on and taking off between stops as possible. A typical “run to town” for me might involve 2-5 visits to local establishments. Since these are generally no more than 10 minutes apart, I don my mask once parked at the first establishment, and usually don’t remove it until just before I depart the parking lot of the last store or shop. This also saves me a few minutes, as proper mask handling (including re-sanitizing one’s hands) between each stop does take a moment or two.

I am using an N95 with a surgical mask as a dust (etc.) prefilter to extend the life of the N95. I find that I can tolerate the N95 for 2-3 hours depending on various conditions. Then, I pretty much have to take a break. The surgical mask I find “inconsequential” used either over the N95, or, once, directly, in a low risk environment, just as an experiment. That is, a surgical mask causes so little discomfort to me that wearing one alone I believe I could do until I needed to eat or drink.

The N95 DOES get uncomfortable after a while, but I wear one because I do part time care for a quite high risk relative, and I can’t risk getting CV-19 and passing it on. The same would be true if a particularly nasty flu variant was going around and had established high penetration in the populace.
