A 29-year-old soldier in basic training was found dead in his barracks at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, Army officials said, marking the fourth death of a soldier at the base in the past year.

The active-duty soldier from Wisconsin was not immediately identified. The base is holding a 48-hour training stand down following the death, the 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment said in a statement.

While the cause of death was under investigation, the base said it was unrelated to COVID-19 and active field training exercise. No further details were immediately given.

Three other soldiers-in-training have died at the base within the past year.

I didn’t think they would take anyone at that old of age.

I can’t imagine being in the Army under these circumstances. The stench of Obama permeates the military still and Covid society is killing people.

Relaxin in Jackson. That’s what my son used to refer to that base. He wasn’t relaxin in Ft.Bragg in 2003.

the Army has upped it’s age limit to 42. I found Basic Training hard when I was 20, can’t even imagine trying it at 42.

Maybe 10 years ago or thereabouts, I got a 3 day contractor gig to roll out computers for some NCO school.

On one of whiteboards was some feel good quote by Barbara Mikulski (?). I recognized the name as a big time liberal.

It bothered me a lot.

Anyway I did my bit. The project manager on site said I did very well and he was going to recommend me as the guy there. Even as a little contract job, I would have been thrilled to get it.

The company apparently lost the contract and maybe went out of business.

I did some checking. In WW II it was 45. That is old. Now days the older ones are probably more likely to pass the weight and drug restrictions.

I went to Boot Camp at 32. Worked my ass off so I could keep up with the kids. Turned out, many of the kids were out-of-shape, and I had the highest PT score of the Company at the start. By the end of Boot Camp, I was 9th or 10th.

I’m sure all the precautions over ‘rona isn’t helping morale much.

I graduated from 13 weeks of initial training for a combat MOS at Ft. Leonard Wood at the age of 31. That was a long time ago.

I'm sure it's rare buy my bother joined the Army at about age 30, but he made it through Basic Training OK.

Do reservists go to Basic mixed in with full-timers or are they separated out? I could imagine people who are too far into their careers at that age to drop out and enlist on fulltime active duty but have realized that their jobs aren’t fulfilling, and want to be part of something bigger than themselves to the extend that they can.

The only guy who died in our barracks (50 years ago) was an OD. The CID came around and asked all of us if we knew anything.

The kid seemed happy being there. Maybe too happy.

How many thousand soldiers cycle through Fort Jackson, a major training base, in a year? Unfortunate yes, but is this statistically significant?

I’m 42 and in way better shape than when I was 20. stronger, better at cardio, etc. way mentally tougher too... but agree that’s not the norm.

Went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego in ‘69. One of the privates in my company was 29. He struggled, but managed to graduate with his platoon.
