Fell asleep, probably.
He was swerving a little before he hit the cars. His truck veered to the right and he corrected back into the lane.
It looked out of control but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out why, or whatever excuse they use to cover up something more sinister.
Not paying attention/distracted or fell asleep.

Why the hell was he in the left lane? Is Cali different than the east coast where truck travel is restricted to the two right lanes on a 3 lane highway.

When I was in my teens we lived in a town where a state freeway (60mph) terminated into a boulevard (30mph). The road was straight as an arrow and although there were signs announcing the speed change some people became so mesmerized they would plow into the intersection at full speed.
One such lady did so and panicked as the light changed. She slammed on her brakes and slid across the intersection, striking my dad’s car at 60 and totaling it. Amazingly for a car that predated airbags, he walked away from the accident with “only” a case of whiplash. She testified that she didn’t see the traffic advisories.

This happened to me one day on I 81. Traffic was stopped for construction and a truck failed to stop and mashed a car up under the truck in front. The truck, 18 wheeler, then careened into the left lane and the median where it turned over and continued to slide.........right at me. I witnessed the overturned truck in my mirror as it slid back on the road and directly at me in my van. It stopped about one truck length before it got to me.
The river was South Asian, packi or some such. The woman in the car was literally enveloped by inflated air bags but did not survive. Her car was pushed under the truck ahead all the way to the windshield
A driver went to the over turned truck as the driver was climbing out a window and just raised holy hell claiming he just killed a woman. The drivers and there were lots of them gathered as traffic was completely stopped, gave that guy hell. They surrounded him to be sure the cops got him
He was charged with vehicular homicide
The damaged and wrecked vehicles crammed together by the crash was a really bad mess.
Same thig happened in South Orange County CA years ago.
A Semi slammed into stopped Cars and an entire Family in a Minivan were killed.
