The first peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to begin in the Gulf state of Qatar on Saturday, after months of delay.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the meeting "historic" as he flew to Doha for the opening ceremony.
The talks were due to start after a US-Taliban security deal in February.
But disagreements over a controversial prisoner swap stalled the next stage, as did violence in Afghanistan, where four decades of war are at a stalemate.
A delegation of leading Afghans left Kabul for Doha on Friday - 11 September, the day 19 years ago of the deadly attacks on the US which led to the end of Taliban rule.
The head of the delegation, Abdullah Abdullah, said they were seeking "a just and dignified peace".
On Thursday the Taliban confirmed they would attend, after a final group of six prisoners were released.

Well these “peace talks” probably are as useful as Henry Kissenger and “The Paris Peace Talks”.
Trump is turning out to be a big time peacemonger - with no money spent or lives lost, in contrast to his two predecessors. Not to forget he also mopped up their messes in Iraq and Syria.
This “war” could’ve been over within weeks after it started.
Wasn’t this an episode of Homeland?
Yeah the North Vietnamese honored the peace treaty by rolling tanks into the South in 75. The Taliban ragheads will honor this deal in the same manner.
I know a bit about Afghanistan. Just from reading history, we’re not going to ‘fix’ it, and we’re not going to change them. Sooner or later, like the Macedonians, like the British, and like the Russians we’re going to leave that place. Sooner would be much better than later. If the Taliban agree to not kill us on the way out and keep to it, we’ll have done well.
Yep, worthy of a third Peace Prize nomination.
Wipe out the poppies.
Wipe out the Taliban.
Leave.
Tough one- China will gain from any progress.
Still, blessed are the peacemakers.
Impressed it’s gotten far enough that Pompeo can go there!
“Yeah the North Vietnamese honored the peace treaty by rolling tanks into the South in 75. The Taliban ragheads will honor this deal in the same manner.”
Agreed.
Didn’t the Taliban just try and kill the Afghani Vice President?
After 19 years and thousands of our brave men and women dead, maimed, or suicidal with PTSD, I really don’t give a s—t what happens to Afghanistan or if the Taliban takes over again. We should have cut bait even way back in 2005.
ANY excuse to get out of Afghanistan is good enough for me.
Even if a future agreement is not worth the paper it’s written on.
“The Taliban ragheads will honor this deal in the same manner.”
It’s hard to givva shit.
Whatever gets us out.
We already killed bin Laden. We have no idea what or why we are in Afghanistan. The Taliban or China can take Afghanistan for all I care. We need more veterans at home just to kick those commie a-holes #%#$ here at home.
The reality is...you really don’t go marching into a country and figure to radically change a people, unless they want the same agenda as you ‘preach’.
Go look in the Balkans, there’s no difference between today and 1914 when the ‘trigger’ occurred to start WW I. Same story in Asia. Same story in El Salvador. Same story in northern Africa.
Trump’s ‘doctrine’ (whatever you want to call it)...is that we aren’t going to waste lives or funds on useless pretender-wars. It’s entirely possible in 2024, after Trump leaves office...that the next President follows the same philosophy and goes through a 25-percent manpower cut on the Pentagon...simply because the war-angle doesn’t exist any longer.
Yep. Wipe out the poppies and the taliban will be history. The poppies are what keeps Afghanistan afloat. Otherwise all they have is goats.
