As Northampton County goes, so goes Pennsylvania -- and, most times, the nation.
For the last century, Northampton County voters have backed the presidential candidate who ended up winning the prize of Pennsylvanias hefty electoral college votes. All but three times since 1920, the candidate Northampton County voters selected assumed the presidency.
This has earned the county a national reputation as a political bellwether and a region where voters are often willing to split their ticket, preferring one party in the White House and another running Congress.
It cemented that standing in 2016 when it became one of 206 counties in a nation of 3,141 counties that went for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 then flipped to President Donald Trump in 2016.
Pennsylvania voters in Northampton, Erie and Luzerne counties played an outsized role in delivering Trump the states 20 electoral votes. With 44,292 ballots, they helped tip the state Republican for the first time since 1988.

Some of these speculations are just silly.
What’s the general tenor of the populace that you’re hearing..... Enthusiasm, signs etc.
Interesting to talk of “bellwether” counties. Do we know if there is any major polling happening in bellwether places? That would be great to see.
how’d they go from Obama to Trump???
>>howd they go from Obama to Trump???<<
That question answers itself. 8 years of worsening race relations and economic malaise LONG after any normal economy would have recovered from the Kennedy-Frank recession.

My brother believed Reagan would die in office because everyone before him that was elected on a year that ended in zero died in office.
That’s no longer a thing...
Correlation is not causation and, frankly, with the number of counties in the country, I’m sure this sort of thing can be done for hundreds of years, since these elections only happen every four years.
i.e. it’s anecdotal, not empirical, evidence.
Lots of Trump signs in yards. There is a sizable democrat population with over 5 private elite colleges here. The Trumpers turned out in thousands when the President was here in May. So much enthusiasm & people waited outside for hours.
I sincerely believe that the election of Obama gave us Trump.
I remember a Christian song back in the early 90’s that lamented about how the world has gone crazy. It was mindbogglingly sane back then compared to the last decade.
And normal people know it (and most people are normal). Everything from black lives matter to men playing sports as girls, to Fascists calling themselves “Antifa”, to obamacare, and on and on came to a head in 2016. And it’s gotten worse. The amount of fraud that will be necessary to defeat Trump is just possibly insurmountable. And at this point, it’s not that Trump is that great (though he is). It is that the alternative is just stupid to anyone not on the far left. And there are simply not very many of them, though it may look like it on the MSM.
And I believe God is in control.
I sincerely believe that the election of Obama gave us Trump.
I remember years ago, some saying that the election of Jimmy Carter paved the way for Ronald Reagan’s election. It’s the same concept, that an inept Democrat helped set the stage for a conservative president.
Yep. That’s how I see it. And I will add, I think Obama was far worse than Carter.
The Democrats have taken note of this pattern and they aren't happy about it. That is why in this election cycle they have pulled out all the stops. They don't want to just beat the Republican-nominee this time -- they want to destroy the credibility of conservative-republicanism for all time. If there's no alternative to socialist policies permitted in polite company then they can never lose. Right?
