Loving Others with Our Prayers

Bible in a Year:

This happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:9

“Are people still praying for me?”

That was one of the first questions a missionary asked his wife whenever she was allowed to visit him in prison. He had been falsely accused and incarcerated for his faith for two years. His life was frequently in danger because of the conditions and hostility in the prison, and believers around the world were earnestly praying for him. He wanted to be assured they wouldn’t stop, because he believed God was using their prayers in a powerful way.

Our prayers for others—especially those who are persecuted for their faith—are a vital gift. Paul made this clear when he wrote the believers in Corinth about hardships he faced during his missionary journey. He “was under great pressure,” so much that he “despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8). But then he told them God had delivered him and described the tool He’d used to do it: “We have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers” (vv. 10–11, emphasis added).

God moves through our prayers to accomplish great good in the lives of His people. One of the best ways to love others is to pray for them, because through our prayers we open the door to the help only God can provide. When we pray for others, we love them in His strength. There’s none greater or more loving than He.

Stand strong and stay safe.

I love driving past Dover on Delaware Route 9. Always think of the thousands of fallen heroes who have passed through there.

I love the USO in the passenger terminal there! I usually fly to Europe from Dover.

Dad was stationed at Dover in the early 70s as it was going to be the main C-141 base on the East Coast and Charleston SC was going to be the East Coast C-5 base. For some reason they swapped aircraft and Dover got the C-5. One offshoot was that Charleston AFB has a hanger built for the C-5 that never had a C-5 in it.

Think the swap was done to keep McGuire AFB, NJ open as a C-141 base. Couldn’t have two C-141 bases only 15 minutes away by air from each other.

88 degrees today and snow tonight. It was smoky and they changed the voluntary evacuation to about 5 miles away then the wind changed and blew the smoke away. 59 degrees now and they are saying 26 tonight. If they do not stop doing that I may become paranoid.

I volunteered to ride a Nightingale from Keesler with a Medical detachment to Dover in March of 1977 to attend the bodies brought back to the US from Tineriffe. I was there four days helping the pathologists with the remains. I only saw the hanger and the barracks they had put up for us temporarily. I have the ultimate respect for those that have this duty year in and year out.
