Arby's just added two new sandwiches that aren't what you'd expect

If Arby's isn't the first restaurant you think of when you hear the word "prime rib," the folks at the 3,400-unit chain want to change your mind with two new cheesesteak sandwiches that use this top-grade cut of beef.

Prime rib is as good as it gets, often reserved for holiday dinners and special occasions, so to use it in a humble cheesesteak sandwich is a little surprising. Usually, cheesesteaks are made with thinly-sliced ribeye or skirt steak, fried with onions and sometimes peppers, tossed with some American cheese, provolone, or, in the case of the classic original Geno's in Philadelphia, Cheez Whiz, then slid from the pan into the roll.

Arby's cheesesteaks are starting with cooked, shaved prime rib however, then adding the peppers and onions and provolone. While the preparation strays from the traditional, the upgrade in meat is an interesting one. Prime rib is an excellent cut of meat and well worth the price when you buy it at your local grocer, according to Cook's Illustrated, so adding it to an Arby's offering certainly boosts its allure.

Prime rib takes cheesesteak up a level

Previous cheesesteak offerings from Arby's, the "We Have The Meats" restaurant, including the Fire Roasted Philly that debuted back in 2016, used the chain's traditional roast beef. The Fire Roasted Philly, which is still on the menu, adds Italian seasonings, Swiss cheese, red and yellow peppers, and roasted garlic aioli on a sub roll.

This time around, the new menu items include the Spicy Prime Rib Cheesesteak, with sliced prime rib, sauteed red and yellow peppers, onions shredded provolone cheese, and a spicy sauce in a toasted sub roll. It has 640 calories.

The Classic Prime Rib Cheesesteak also features the sliced prime rib, red and yellow peppers, onions, and melted provolone. No spicy sauce on the classic, and it comes in at 600 calories.

Are these the real deal, such that one would find in Philadelphia? No, but give Arby's credit for an upscale and creative twist on a classic.

I eat at Arby's about once every two years. I'm not crazy about their plasticized roast beef, but I like their beef and cheddar and I really like the jus they use for their French dip sandwiches.

This prime rib cheesesteak though is something I have to try. I don't know how much it costs and it's available around here for a "limited time only." But prime rib cheesesteak? It must be good.

I loved Arby’s pot roast sandwich.

So of course, they got rid of it. Been awhile back.

I thought they only added new sandwiches for one reason. To raise menu prices across the board. The new item is almost always their most expensive one on the menu. They eventually drop most of the new additions but keep the price increases.

I don’t know why fast food joints do that. McDonald’s did the same thing with their Mcrib sandwiches. I never had one, but I heard they were pretty popular.

Arby’s also has a brisket sandwich I’d like to try. The best roast beef I ever had was a slow roasted brisket, and I got that in school cafeteria, if you can believe it.

Arby’s is expensive. But they must be doing something right. Getting in and out of their parking lot at lunchtime is like driving in Chicago.

A little high but cheaper than Chik-fil-A.

Dan Cathy’s liberalism drove me off. I’m not sure I’ll step in one again. If so, it will be a rare occasion.

Last time I was there, I spent $42 for 2 people (got a bit to go).

Hard to get out of there for less than $25 for 2. (I’d get tenders and a sandwich combo).

I guess with the restaurants all closed cause of the “pandemic” there no market for prime rib anymore so now fast food joints can get it.

I’d buy it if they sold it to grocery stores.

Theres a reason that the McRib appears and then falls off the menu in cycles. It uses a particular cut that can often be purchased in large quantities quite cheaply so they can make a decent margin. When an organization as big as McDonalds starts buying up the worlds supply then the price goes up for whats left. The margin isnt great anymore and sometimes it gets to the point where there just isnt any more of that meat to purchase at any price. They stop, the supply builds up, prices drop, it comes back on the menu.

McDonald’s brings back the McRib periodically for a limited time; they make a big to-do about it.

I like Arby’s pecan chicken salad sandwich; it has a limited summer run. If Arby’s is bringing out a new sandwich, then the chicken salad is probably about to leave.

all I know is they did real good switching from their processed meat to real brisket. I actually enjoy that sandwich from time to time...

McDonalds only buys pork for the McRib every 6-18 months when prices hit absolute rock bottom.Then they buy in ABSOLUTE MASSIVE quantities.

Elitist Whole Foods Lefty pricks aside, McRib and Spicy Prime Rib cheesesteaks are good for the money.

That’s your choice. I have to wonder, though, why you’d post in a thread that on a topic in which you have no interest,

I compare it to two people standing at the water cooler and someone comes up and says, “I’m not interested in what you’re talking about.” Some folks might consider that rude.

That’s for sure. A couple years ago I got some Arby’s sliders that were salt bombs. I got five for five dollars, but I couldn’t even finish one.
