Obama advised LeBron James, other NBA players to resume season: Report (want Obama to get involved)

Former President Barack Obama advised a group of NBA players led by Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James to return to the court this week after a brief boycott to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake, according to a report Friday.

James reached out to Obama shortly after a tense Wednesday night meeting in which the Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers informally voted to boycott the rest of the NBA playoffs, The Athletic reported. On the phone call, Obama advised James and his fellow players to detail the demands they had in order to resume play.

The players broached the possibility of forming a committee for player action with Obama’s involvement, according to the report. Other participants on the call included NBA All-Star Chris Paul, who serves as president of the National Basketball Players Association.

The NBA survives now only because of the $2.6-billion a year coming in from the TV contract (good until 2024/2025). It’s the networks who are consuming the loss of revenue (with fewer viewers). Will be the same for next season.

If I were the NBA, I’d prepare myself for the negotiation period, and likely chance that the yearly TV income for the next contract will be marginally $1-billion at the very most.

The major sports leagues can get away their behavior because they are monopolies, right down to charging $8 for a hot dog. Pro golfers are not monopolies, so they act like normal businessmen, and don’t irritate their fans. Even airlines, which are near monopolies, treat their customers with respect, because there is still some choice on airlines. Of course airlines work diligently to get rid of competition and become monopolies on some routes.

This could be a two-fer. I would assume advertisers pay networks based upon eyeballs watching the entertainment. Fewer viewers, less funds. But the networks seem to have locked-in payments. So both the overpaid sports world and media can suffer financially.

And Lebrainless should have called a businessman instead of a thief.

By several accounts, the younger NBA players who don’t have the kind of wealth or security that LeBron James does objected strongly to him and other superstars trying to speak for them and rebelled. Athletic careers are short for most players - $800k/year sounds like a lot, but if you barely hanging on to a bench spot you’re not likely to support LeBron James’ calls to cancel the only season you’re ever likely to have in the NBA.

0bama started this whole mess, but probably didn’t realize it would blossom so quickly and start costing other powerful people so much money.

He’s probably trying to keep his own kneecaps from being broken.

Democrats. Just like the Clintons won’t go away. Obamas won’t go away. We are so sick of these people. Bushes won’t go away. Even Jimmy Carter won’t go away. Why don’t they shut their mouth and get out of Washington and leave the country alone?

For those who want the NBA to fail - this is good news.
