Nun, Army Veteran and Physician Defends Life at RNC: 'We First Met Jesus as a Stirring Embryo'

Sister Deirdre Byrne, a Catholic nun, U.S. Army veteran, and physician, delivered a powerful speech praising President Donald Trump and hailing life against the evils of abortion at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Wednesday. She spoke about serving the marginalized in Kenya, Haiti, Sudan, Iraq, and Washington, D.C. — but she said, “the largest marginalized group in the world can be found in the United States. They are the unborn.”

She gave a stirring theological defense of the pro-life movement.

“As Christians, we first met Jesus as a stirring embryo in the womb of an unwed mother and saw him born nine months later in the poverty of the cave,” Sister Byrne declared. “It’s no coincidence that Jesus stood up for what was just and was ultimately crucified because what he said wasn’t politically correct or fashionable.”

While Christians should hesitate to interpret the life of Jesus in political terms, the narrative of the Gospels does begin with the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel tells Mary she will conceive a son, and with Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. When Mary visits Elizabeth, John the Baptist leaps in Elizabeth’s womb when he felt the presence of Jesus nearby. Although John the Baptist, not Jesus, leapt in the womb, Byrne referred to Jesus “stirring” because John the Baptist must have felt His presence (Luke 1:41).

In a very real sense, Jesus was in a similar situation to the marginalized unborn Americans who are vulnerable to the heinous evil of abortion.

“As followers of Christ, we are called to stand up for life and against the politically correct or fashionable today,” Sister Byrne declared.

My wife went to Georgetown Medical School with her. We’ve had dinner with her a number of times. She is the real deal. And breaks EVERY stereo type of a nun. Hilarious and hard-charging. What a gift to humanity. We were so surprised watching CSPAN last night to see her come on the screen.

(I know she was an MD, but almost anything about nuns has the potential to hit my funny bone. It must have been the torture as a kid...:)

The unwed mother and the born in poverty meme is a deceptive narrative that leftist Christians often use to promote government spending. It was nice to see Sister Byrne turn it back against them.

Hers was one of the best speeches last night. Lots of speeches are just people reading platitudes. The people who have a real story to tell really hit home as she did.

Full Text: Sister Dede Byrne’s Speech at the 2020 Republican National Convention

Good evening. I am Sister Dede Byrne, and I belong to the Community of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Last Fourth of July, I was honored to be one of the president’s guests at his Salute to America celebration. I must confess that I recently prayed while in chapel, begging God to allow me to be a voice, an instrument for human life.

And now here I am, speaking at the Republican National Convention. I guess you’d better be careful what you pray for.

My journey to religious life was not a traditional route, if there is such a thing. In 1978, as a medical school student at Georgetown University, I joined the Army to help pay for my tuition, and ended up devoting 29 years to the military, serving as a doctor and a surgeon in places like Afghanistan and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

After much prayer and contemplation, I entered my religious order in 2002, working to serve the poor and the sick in Haiti, Sudan, Kenya, Iraq and in Washington, D.C. Humility is at the foundation of our order, which makes it very difficult to talk about myself. But I can speak about my experience working for those fleeing war-torn and impoverished countries all around the world. Those refugees all share a common experience. They have all been marginalized, viewed as insignificant, powerless and voiceless.

And while we tend to think of the marginalized as living beyond our borders, the truth is the largest marginalized group in the world can be found here in the United States. They are the unborn.

As Christians, we first met Jesus as a stirring embryo in the womb of an unwed mother and saw him born nine months later in the poverty of the cave. It is no coincidence that Jesus stood up for what was just and was ultimately crucified because what he said was not politically correct or fashionable.

As followers of Christ, we are called to stand up for life against the politically correct or fashionable of today. We must fight against a legislative agenda that supports and even celebrates destroying life in the womb. Keep in mind, the laws we create define how we see our humanity.

We must ask ourselves: What we are saying when we go into a womb and snuff out an innocent, powerless, voiceless life? As a physician, I can say without hesitation: Life begins at conception.

While what I have to say may be difficult for some to hear, I am saying it because I am not just pro-life, I am pro-eternal life. I want all of us to end up in heaven together someday.

Which brings me to why I am here today. Donald Trump is the most pro-life president this nation has ever had, defending life at all stages. His belief in the sanctity of life transcends politics.

President Trump will stand up against Biden-Harris, who are the most anti-life presidential ticket ever, even supporting the horrors of late-term abortion and infanticide. Because of his courage and conviction, President Trump has earned the support of America’s pro-life community. Moreover, he has a nationwide of religious standing behind him. You’ll find us here with our weapon of choice, the rosary. Thank you, Mr. President, we are all praying for you.

There was a movie starring Sidney Poitier almost 60 years ago about a travelling handyman whose good nature and stubborn pride convince him to help a group of refugee nuns build a chapel in the dusty middle of nowhere. His comic sparring with stern mother superior Lilia Skala makes for an extremely likeable film that stops just short of sentimentality. Poitier won an Oscar for his portrayal. The first black man to win the Award.

When Denzel Washington picked up his Oscar for Training Day, he made sure to namecheck Sidney Poitier, the only other black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. It's surprising, perhaps, that Poitier made cinema history with such an easy-going, laid-back film that doesn't make an issue out of racial differences.

I'm not if Hollywood will ever bother to make a movie like this today.

It touched on them deftly, between the response sister made, pointing out how her sisters had to flee the Communists in Europe with nothing and later when the Hispanics were laughing at Poitier as they watched him try to build the church all by himself. My favorite subtlety was Poitier going away for the weekend and coming back with sunglasses, and not feeling to good. You know he got mixed up with something bad, and a lesser director would have made it explicit. This one left it to our imaginations. Great movie.

I watched “Lilies of the Field” recently on DVD. Absolutely one of my favorite movies ever. I replayed the last few minutes of the movie at least five times, never with a dry eye.

Also, there was some tension initially between the construction company owner when he called Homer “Boy”. Yet, he gave Homer a chance and hired him. Toward the end of the movie, the owner was so impressed with Homer he offered him a promotion to foreman.
