Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

Nature....so incredible!
Saw this...
....The first time the Mississippi reversed its flow was in 1812, when a massive earthquake in the region caused a fluvial tsunami in the river, sending the water straight back where it came from. The actual seismic activity began at the tail end of 1811, but it wasnt until the new year began that the water started going in the opposite direction.
Since 2005, the Mississippi has actually reversed flow twice. The first time was during Hurricane Katrina, when the flow was reversed and it was an astonishing 4 meters (13 ft) higher than usual. However, the reverse flow of the river only lasted a relatively short time, just a few hours.
In 2012 the Mississippi ran backward for an incredible 24 hours in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac. The force from the hurricane was so strong that the river started moving water at a rate of 5,200 cubic meters per second (182,000 cubic feet per second) in the wrong direction. In case youre keeping track, thats a more powerful flow than the Mississippi typically reaches when going downstream, and the increased power is pretty significant.
At the end of the day this just serves as a not-so-subtle reminder that Mother Nature is never, ever to be trifled with....

Stopping by this thread to let anyone in harm’s way know that you are in my prayers. God be with you.
It’s a monster!
For historical context, there are no Cat 4 or Cat 5 hurricanes on record making landfall in SW Louisiana. Hurricane Laura is going to be a historic, unprecedented, and catastrophic storm for the region. (Meteorologist at NWS Melbourne, FL)
Water...it's so strong and powerful!
Going to hit where a cat 4 or 5 has never hit land in SW Lousianna. Historical it will be.
Lake charles may get the NNE eye wall but no south wind to funnel up the max surge
This surge could penetrate up to 30 miles inland from the immediate coastline.
30 miles inland!
It’s like the flood of Noah.
I don’t understand all there is on how it works....enough to know this beast is going to leave destruction behind it. Just posted graph saying surge could go 30 miles inland.
I know this is just sooo serious... It’s really chilling!
People shouldn’t underestimate this storm.
You mean montgomery?
The serious hurricanes for our part of the country in the last few years have mostly come ashore at night: Katrina, Rita, Ike. So its unfortunately appropriate that Laura do the same as well.
Due to the slow forward speed, the odds are pretty much 50/50 that a storm will roll through at night.
Guy at Lake Charles says lights off downtown lake Charles.....winds at 126....he’s in his car reporting from a parking garage.
