Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

Hurricane Laura Tropical Cyclone Update
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL132020
715 AM CDT Tue Aug 25 2020
...NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER REPORTS THAT LAURA HAS BECOME A
HURRICANE...
NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft data indicate that Laura has become
a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), with
higher gusts.
She doesn’t look too small either...
How did you fare with Harvey? (not that this storm is expected to resemble Harvey)
What is she projected to hit landfall as?
Houston will be fine, Louisiana low country, not so much
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km)
from the center.
Current prediction is landfall as a major hurricane (Category 3).
Not good if this holds.
Thanks—I hadn’t realized that. Thought maybe a cat 1.
Houston is built on bayous. Flooding is always a concern.
That was fast... 70mph @ 7:00am to 75mph @ 7:15am ..
Extrapolating over the next 24 hours - it should have winds of ~ 550 mph!
Hey, it’s 2020 after all...!
Coming in cat 3

I used to live in New Orleans, I understand
Elevation of our home... 4’ (in 80’s) now it’s 3’
Personally, I did fine with Harvey. It did not actually hit us (it hit SW of us), so we did not have any winds; but it dumped a ton of rain. My street must have great drainage because the water never got higher that just over the street curb. I went out many times to check the street drains to make sure no debris was blocking them.
Ike was worse for me. Lots and lots of wind. It went on all night. I remember watching out the window as transformers exploded in the distance. I ended up having to replace the shingles on the roof and the backyard fence after Ike.
The forecast evolved late yesterday into a major hurricane prediction, after Laura emerged from Cuba terrain influence. Now there is really nothing preventing the storm from strengthening.
I know, waiting for it to take a hard right and hit FL, because 2020..
Laura is a large storm. Tropical storm winds will have a vast reach. We’ll know more about the diameter of hurricane force winds in a couple of hours.
