~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut Naval Submarine Base New London is the United States Navy's primary East Coast submarine base, also known as the "Home of the Submarine Force". It is located in Groton, Connecticut directly across the Thames River from its namesake city of New London. Naval Submarine Base New London stretches along the east side of the Thames River, straddling the communities of Groton and Ledyard. While Groton is often referred to as the Submarine Capital of the World, the Base proudly bears the title - Home of the Submarine Force. Almost every submariner in todays Navy will be stationed here for training. A tour of duty in one of the fast-attack submarines home ported here or with a pre-commissioning crew for a new submarine under construction at General Dynamics Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton may follow. Occupying more than 680 acres, with more than 160 major facilities and 15 nuclear submarines, Naval Submarine Base New London supports fleet readiness by providing quality service and facilities to Naval Fleet, Fighters, and Families. The Base mission is twofold: to homeport and put Submarines to sea; and to support the Submarine Center of Excellence that trains Sailors to take Submarines to sea. Naval Submarine Base New London is also home to more than 70 tenant commands and activities including Commander Submarine Group Two; the Submarine Learning Center; Naval Submarine School; the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory; and, the Naval Undersea Medical Institute. Whew! That’s a lot of work! At least you have shade in your yard and that helps a little. Judging from Gizmo’s panting while at the lake, it must have been a bit toasty.
You had a productive and fun day by the sound of things.

All appendages crossed for luck! Neither of us wants anything bad to have happened to that handsome Ghost.
I’d forgotten you’d said it was going to be cool there tonight. I hope it helps you sleep better!

I visited the base years ago and was able to tour a nuclear attack sub. My niece’s husband was stationed on the sub and arranged clearance so we could tour the sub.

T-Storms every day at unpredictable moments have made motorcycling a bit “iffy”.
Today looks good so far!

I went from Groton to SD, and then Everywhere LOL
Ca was nice then, by the 90’s it was craptacular so I went to Tx
When I got to Ca there were more honky tonks and cowboys in Ca than Tx LOL, when I left Ca it was a wasteland of condos

Wow! Great to see all these submariners on here coming to the surface. I was born and raised in Stonington, 12 miles from the base, and stationed on the base for 13 years. Either on the “Hill,” on shore duty or the “lower” base on a boat. Qualified on Skate SSN-578, re-qualified on Nautilus SSN-571 and on the Danial Webster SSBN-626G.The SUB base is the best little base in the world.

It's not quite as hot here.
