Trump to Republicans: Don’t put marijuana on the ballot at the same time you’re running
Chicago Tribune ^ | AUG 19, 2020 | BRENDAN BURES

Posted on 08/23/2020 2:20:15 PM PDT by NobleFree

President Donald Trump hosted a campaign rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the same night the Democratic National Convention was scheduled to kick off in Milwaukee. While Democrats instead opted for a virtual conference to avoid spreading the coronavirus, Trump drew a crowd of at least 1,000 people.

In off-the-cuff remarks, Trump suggested to Republicans that if they wanted to win elections, they had to keep cannabis legalization off the ballot. Though the Trump Administration has attacked cannabis reform in behind-closed-doors proceedings and by blocking legislative action, this is the first time the President has made negative comments about cannabis in public. “The next time you run please don’t put marijuana on the ballot at the same time you’re running,” Trump said at the rally. “You brought out like a million people that nobody ever knew were coming out.”

The comments were directed at former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who was among the crowd and was ousted in the 2018 midterm election by Democratic challenger and current Gov. Tony Evers. But the 2018 gubernatorial race was heated with just over one percentage point of total votes separating Evers and Walker.

However, statewide legalization wasn't on the Wisconsin ballot in 2018. Instead a number of local advisory questions appeared in 16 counties, which all voted affirmatively they would support recreational or medical cannabis reform. But these voter approvals were nonbinding and only serve to gauge public sentiment on a given topic.

These ballot measures were placed there by elected officials in those individual counties. Walker had no role in placing them on the ballot, as Trump suggested. Data suggests those measures may have tipped the gubernatorial race Evers' favor. Official results show Evers gained significant votes in those 16 counties [...]

One does not just show a Driver Licence like when buying beer. Your DL's barcode is scanned. The scanner belongs to the State.

There have been several FR threads on this.

Your scanned information will become part of the background check after you complete a 4473 to purchase a firearm.

*Did you lie when filling out the 4473? Your signature says you did not. Information from the State may say otherwise.

Democrats use weed on the ballot to GOTV for the Dem ticket. They did it here in Florida a couple years ago.

Republicans need to support legalization.

Not just NO but HELL NO. It's not legal in Georgia and yet Atlanta is miserable with the stench of weed. I should be able to work or shop or enjoy my home without a contact high (which just makes me irritable, I'm weird that way) from someone nearby lighting up.

“The GOP needs to compete for their vote - which starts with taking the limited-government stand that marijuana should be legalized.”

Won’t work.

Pot makes people think weird and accept all the leftist propaganda.

Pot is a gateway drug.Study, after study, after study have shown that.I have a 25+ year career in Emergency Medicine.I've seen...close up and personal...what hard drugs do.

Singapore, and at least a few other countries, have it right...possession of more that a certain amount of certain drugs gets you the DP...no exceptions!

I wish you guys would understand th difference in Medical and regulat street pot. I have a medical doctor explain to me that he believes he could kill pain that I had been having daily since two feet surgeries to remove everything in there. Most people have experienced and “twinge” of nerve pain but when it its endless it requires sedation and pain relief. For me it was 90 Oxycontin 10mg for a 30 day supply. And I HATE taking pills! Spent 18 years on that stuff until a well respected pain management specialist sent me to a Physician who specializes in in holistic medicine. He gave me a thorough physical with blood tests and looked at my hostory. He prescribed liquid THC for me. I was in LE when I was young and the thought of trying this was abhorent.
Guess what??? It is actually better than OC. Havent had a pill in 2 years

“”””””” I don’t remember reading about home invasions done by people looking for money so they can go get a case of Schlitz.

That’s because their drug is legal hence cheap. Thanks for the pro-legalization point! “”””””””””””””””””””””

Wow. You stoners are really something.

I guess you are saying that if drugs were legal they would be so cheap that nobody would be stealing everything in sight to support their habit.

If you don’t understand the difference between booze and drugs then I will just sit back and watch you blubber.

At least you stoners are entertaining.

Are you one of those confused people who believe the stories about people spending years in prison for having a lid of weed?

Straw man - nobody said a word about length of sentence. The fact remains that plenty of people are in prison on possession charges.

Originally you said people were put in cages for using weed.

That wasn't me - lay off the booze.

Now you are saying they go to prison for possession but don’t seem to know how much it takes to put you there.

Ah, so your straw man about AMOUNT was your focus, not your straw man about length of sentence?

"It is a crime to knowingly or intentionally possess any amount marijuana or synthetic cannabis (including small amounts for personal use) in Mississippi. Penalties vary according to the amount possessed.

"Up to 30 grams of marijuana or up to ten grams of synthetic cannabis. Penalties include a fine of $100 to $250. Subsequent convictions of this type within a two-year period are punished with a $250 fine, and up to 60 days in jail, in addition to participation in a mandatory drug education program. A third or subsequent conviction is punished with a fine between $250 and $1,000, and up to six months in jail. (Miss. Code § 41-29-139(c)(2)(A) (2019).) [...]

"Between 30 and 250 grams of marijuana or 11 to 20 grams of synthetic cannabis. Penalties include a fine of up to $1,000, up to a year in jail, or both; or as many as three years in prison, a fine of up to $3,000, or both. (Miss. Code § 41-29-139(c)(2)(B) and (C) (2019).)" - https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/marijuana-laws-and-penalties/mississippi.htm

You stoners

Still telling this lie? What low character.

I guess you are saying that if drugs were legal they would be so cheap that nobody would be stealing everything in sight to support their habit.

Supply, demand, and market competition - it's Econ 101.

Was that directed at me? I said I have no opinion on legalizing pot. The reason I have no opinion is because I see both sides of the argument.

Pot is a gateway drug.Study, after study, after study have shown that.

What studies have shown is that users of harder drugs usually previously used pot - and alcohol, and tobacco; either they're all gateway drugs and should be banned, or none are.

I say make it all legal. Even sniffing glue and huffing gasoline.

I am aware of no laws against those.
