Trump to Republicans: Don’t put marijuana on the ballot at the same time you’re running
Chicago Tribune ^ | AUG 19, 2020 | BRENDAN BURES

Posted on 08/23/2020 2:20:15 PM PDT by NobleFree

President Donald Trump hosted a campaign rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the same night the Democratic National Convention was scheduled to kick off in Milwaukee. While Democrats instead opted for a virtual conference to avoid spreading the coronavirus, Trump drew a crowd of at least 1,000 people.

In off-the-cuff remarks, Trump suggested to Republicans that if they wanted to win elections, they had to keep cannabis legalization off the ballot. Though the Trump Administration has attacked cannabis reform in behind-closed-doors proceedings and by blocking legislative action, this is the first time the President has made negative comments about cannabis in public. “The next time you run please don’t put marijuana on the ballot at the same time you’re running,” Trump said at the rally. “You brought out like a million people that nobody ever knew were coming out.”

The comments were directed at former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who was among the crowd and was ousted in the 2018 midterm election by Democratic challenger and current Gov. Tony Evers. But the 2018 gubernatorial race was heated with just over one percentage point of total votes separating Evers and Walker.

However, statewide legalization wasn't on the Wisconsin ballot in 2018. Instead a number of local advisory questions appeared in 16 counties, which all voted affirmatively they would support recreational or medical cannabis reform. But these voter approvals were nonbinding and only serve to gauge public sentiment on a given topic.

These ballot measures were placed there by elected officials in those individual counties. Walker had no role in placing them on the ballot, as Trump suggested. Data suggests those measures may have tipped the gubernatorial race Evers' favor. Official results show Evers gained significant votes in those 16 counties [...]

“”””Plenty of people are in prison on possession charges “”””

Now you are talking about possession. You initially said people got thrown in cages for using. Is the weed destroying your short term memory?

A few hold out states will start drooling over the marijuana tax revenue and will soon roll over.

When politicians do the right thing for the wrong reason, we need to take the win.

Split those hairs ... isn't any user in possession of the pot he's using?

Your ID used at a legal pot store will label one as a drug user.

I'm not aware that any state requires pot shops to keep a record of whose IDs are shown. And even if they do, at least a gun-owning pot user has a choice under legalization.

I haven't used pot in about a quarter-century. Is booze making you ornery?

That’s a path no one wants to go down except for the big government controlling leftist. Remember, they can do the same with alcohol and many pharmaceutical drugs.

Are you one of those confused people who believe the stories about people spending years in prison for having a lid of weed?

I believe MA mandates ID and a computer record of your visit before you enter a legal shop. I think they have some reassuring language that they don’t maintain permanent records, but anyone who believes that is a fool. I see it like gun registration. The records just make it easier for them to “get you” later on if they decide that they want to know who their enemies are.

Done splitting hairs now?

Straw man - nobody said a word about length of sentence. The fact remains that plenty of people are in prison on possession charges.

I don’t drink. I don’t do drugs.

However, I do have to put up with all the societal problems caused by druggies.

I don’t remember reading about home invasions done by people looking for money so they can go get a case of Schlitz.

In MA they check your ID. Just as they do in a liquor store. I don’t think they are “tracking it.” Just as easy to grow your own and no one is the wiser.

It brings all the stoners out to vote who of course vote Democrat if they show up.

Put Weed in you before you go to the polls.

Just kidding.

They opened it up in MA. It was legalized for a while and they really dragged their feet on recreational sales.

I also know that the illegal weed business is still pretty steady. The MA State Police find cars full of the stuff. The folks in the hood don’t like paying retail, I guess.

Now you are grasping at straws. Originally you said people were put in cages for using weed.

Now you are saying they go to prison for possession but don’t seem to know how much it takes to put you there.

This is why I stopped debating stoners years ago. They make stuff up to bolster their argument.

I had numerous employees over the years who did time for drug crimes. Being caught with five pounds might get you a short trip to the can. According to the stoner stories you would think they get the electric chair for a few joints.

That's because their drug is legal hence cheap. Thanks for the pro-legalization point!

LOL

The illegal market is thriving.

I heard they’re pretty pricey, those places.

The GOP needs to compete for their vote - which starts with taking the limited-government stand that marijuana should be legalized.

I say make it all legal. Even sniffing glue and huffing gasoline. Good way to rid the world of idiots. But give or sell to a minor. Automatic death penalty.
