Louisiana State Police are investigating the death of Trayford Pellerin, a 31-year-old Black man who was fatally shot Friday night during an encounter with officers from the Lafayette Police Department.
Officers were called to a Lafayette convenience store shortly after 8 p.m. Friday to respond to a "disturbance involving a person armed with a knife," according to a statement from the Louisiana State Police.
The police found Pellerin in the store's parking lot with a knife, the statement says. When officers tried to apprehend him, Pellerin left and officers followed on foot. The police used Tasers as they pursued him, the statement says, "but they were ineffective."
The officers shot Pellerin as he tried to enter a convenience store along NW Evangeline Thruway, according to Louisiana State Police. Pellerin was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
State police said no officers were injured and that the investigation is "active and ongoing." No further information was available.
Asked for comment, the Lafayette Police Department referred CNN to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the investigation following a request Friday from the Lafayette police.

So they gonna burn the city down before or after it is revealed he just raped and murdered an entire kindergarten class while on PCP?
Walking into a store with a knife in his hand, ignoring a bunch of cops yelling at him to drop it. Then they take him. No reaction.
Completely understandable. Justified.
Anymore, can’t shoot a fleeing criminal without the natives and their Left wing puppet masters going crazy.
Where’s the problem? Light him up!
They should have listened to Joe Biden and just shot him in the leg.
The police probably saved someones life.
Married to Trayhonda.
Commie left would have preferred this guy go into the gas station and stab people to death cause hey, none of their family members were in that gas station
“Walking into a store with a knife in his hand, ignoring a bunch of cops yelling at him to drop it. Then they take him. No reaction.”
Isn’t anyone at all concerned with the (probably black) people IN the store being approached with a guy with a knife?
I’ll bet that THEY were a bit concerned.
RULE 0: When the police tell you to drop you weapon and you don’t, you are probably going to get your *** shot. Black, white, doesn’t matter.
Or several lives.
“They should have listened to Joe Biden and just shot him in the leg.”
Why hurt anyone? Couldn’t they have just shot the knife out of the guy’s hand? I see that all the time on TV </s>
Although Biden will never be President, maybe you could become his personal safety advisor. /s
That’s what you do when someone is unarmed with a knife.
In the video the girl with the camera says drop the knife, they gonna shoot you!
Well played
Black Crazy People Matter, whether they are armed and dangerous or not. RIGHT? Not a f*king chance.
My son was a federal police officer with absolute Shoot to Kill authority due to his federal facilities protection work.
He and two of his other officers, twice, were able to disable mentally impaired men with knives who were threatening nearby civilians as well as the officers.
I assume they surrounded him in a triangle formation and bullrushed him with a feint from the front and the other two hit him from the sides.
Sometimes you can do that. Sometimes you have to shoot.
Oh, did I say that all three officers were combat veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan? They had absolute fire discipline but also combat kills so they knew what force should be used in this situation. Otherwise, they would have shot and killed the assailant with their first shots.
CNN/MS fairies have no idea what real life is like. Just imagine Brian Steltzer as a cop, a Keystone Cop. Would either piss in his pants the first time there was a threat or would shoot himself in the foot when he pulled his gun out of its holster, if he even knew how to do it.
I say leave this to the armed citizenry
Yep - prevented him from getting into a store where there were potential hostages.
