The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season continues to heat up as we are two weeks shy of average season peak activity. Two tropical systems are taking aim at the Gulf of Mexico concurrently. Tropical Storm Laura has formed east of the Leeward Islands. Marco is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula.
There is a possibility we may see the amazing Fujiwhara Effect, where two storms within 870 miles of each other will dance around each other. If one storm is significantly stronger, the weaker storm will be absorbed into the stronger storm. If the two storms are similar in size, they can gravitate toward each other until they reach a common point where they either merge or they spin each other around for a while before they spin off in different directions. The likelihood of a Fujiwhara Effect is low, however, due to the relatively small area in the Gulf of Mexico.
Laura's fate is dependent upon the extent of interaction with the tall mountains of Hispanola and Cuba.

We were stuck, for hours, in the Rita traffic.
HORRIBLE!! We had two carfuls of kids and pets.....w/no potties in sight.
Finally, an angel Sheriff appeared and directed us off of the interstate and onto a back road that got us to outside of San Antonio, in pretty good time (w/safe potty stops and food, along the route).

2004 was the year of the plywood windows and a dark "crack house" motif for much of the summer. Invested in the storm screens after that. Big difference!

Thank you for the correction from PR.
Still overcast here in the DR, only modest winds on the south coast. Rain bands passing through with heavy, but short-lived, rain.

No, no they were not. I walked up the main blvd past the hotel to the local Supermedcardo, and saw lots of customers - But they were lined up (COVID separation dist ants) in front of the watch and jewelry store, the cell phone store, the clothes store. The big grocery store was busy - yes, crowded - but everybody looked more like they were getting normal Saturday levels of stuff. Shelves were near-full too.
Same at the pharmacia next door.
I got two 6 packs, several cans of soup and tuna fish, and two large boxes of crackers. Water bottles and coffee were already back at the room. Flashlights, backup lights and extra batteries.

Projected impacts are within about 50 miles of each other and 36 hours apart. Tell me this isn’t 2020.

Thanks as usual for doing the normal fantastic job that you do NN,no one better!
I have been watching Laura for a few days now with the first track pointed directly at us which was actually reassuring. When a storm is pointed directly at your home as Laura was a few days ago odds on it keeping that track or really low.Its more likely to go either north or south of us since they don't go in the same direction forever, they always move. This one moved South and I'm glad.
We are now out of the cone and unless it moves north we wont get any really bad issues from Laura.
This is a storm to watch however.
Some of the forecasts are for it to move over Hispanola and Cuba and still stay at 50 knots and keep its circulation which means its a serious storm. Lots of times they lose a lot when the center crosses land especially the mountains of both islands, we shall see.
Once again we go into prime time storm season without any meaningful buoy info thanks to NOAA.
Key to this storm, information wise, would have been Molasses reef light. This info has been gone for over a year which supports my argument that much of NOAA needs to be privatized.

Interesting. Last evening our local meteorologist said the Fujiwhara potential was low because of the small area in the Gulf of Mexico. It's academic anyway. Latest projections have Marco making landfall in Louisiana when Laura is still over Cuba.
To: NautiNurse
Whoa, Nelly. And here it looked like we were gonna dodge two bullets. Gotta get back outside and try to get the yard work finished, before one or both pull another Crazy Ivan and track any further east. We may be getting a spot of weather after all.

What did the NOAA do to its buoys? Think they were too sexist or something? (Maybe they could get more funding if they were girlies? )

No. But I expected some kind of shenanigans out of hurricane season this year. Just didn’t expect twinsies.
