TS Laura and Marco
NOAA/NHC ^ | 21 August 2020 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 08/22/2020 1:57:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season continues to heat up as we are two weeks shy of average season peak activity. Two tropical systems are taking aim at the Gulf of Mexico concurrently. Tropical Storm Laura has formed east of the Leeward Islands. Marco is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula.

There is a possibility we may see the amazing Fujiwhara Effect, where two storms within 870 miles of each other will dance around each other. If one storm is significantly stronger, the weaker storm will be absorbed into the stronger storm. If the two storms are similar in size, they can gravitate toward each other until they reach a common point where they either merge or they spin each other around for a while before they spin off in different directions. The likelihood of a Fujiwhara Effect is low, however, due to the relatively small area in the Gulf of Mexico.

Laura's fate is dependent upon the extent of interaction with the tall mountains of Hispanola and Cuba.

She should have a full tank of gas already. Battery charger(s) fully charged. Bag ready to go with water and snacks.

Was that Ike or Rita with the impossible traffic jams as the storm was bearing down?

Darker, heavier clouds now coming in from the east - As you would expect from the storm’s location. No rains yet. Am going to be off-line for a bit to get some more bottled water, canned foods.

"Was that Ike or Rita with the impossible traffic jams as the storm was bearing down? "

Whichever it was I remember that mess...many ran out of gas.
After that fiasco, the state of Alabama began pre-positioning loaded fuel tankers at strategic points up and down the freeways leading from the coast during the slightest threat of a hurricane landing.

The rain bands you got yesterday in the DR were actually from a separate tropical wave that went through the area. We got it a day earlier in Puerto Rico.

NN, hi. In the San Juan Metro Area so far heavy overcast with some moderate to heavy rain about a couple of hours ago. Almost no wind with that band. Seems like another cell coming in from the V.I.

The NHC has the center of the storm just soutwest of the island, but looking at the radar and the convection just south of the eastern half of Puerto Rico, there seems to be some other rotation to that mess.

Interesting stuff Nauti. If they're of similar size and merge - do they become more powerful or less powerful?

It seems schizoid Laura isn’t quite sure where it wants to be. Yesterday the center of circulation re-formed south of previous circulation.
