Alabama coach Nick Saban thinks opt-outs would turn spring football into JV

Alabama coach Nick Saban questioned the viability of a spring football season during his appearance on ESPN's Get Up on Tuesday, asking whether pro prospects would even consider participating.

"I think one of the real consequences of this is, if you're a junior or a senior and you have an NFL grade, are you going to play in the spring?" Saban said. "Or is that going to become sort of a JV season with a lot of these juniors and seniors opting out?"

Several current college football players have told ESPN they'd be unwilling to play a spring season, citing the risk of injury so close to the NFL draft, which is scheduled to begin on April 29.

A week ago, the Big Ten and Pac-12 announced that they would postpone all fall sports during the coronavirus pandemic, with the hope of playing football in the spring.

The SEC, ACC and Big 12 all have plans to start their seasons in late September.

The Juniors and Seniors should offer their services to any pro team, let the market work.

Shut up Nick

If pussy ass football players want to stay home - there’s 10 more kids just waiting for a chance to jump in their stead

This is even more true in the NFL where these idiots are getting upwards of a half $1 million a game

There is another issue for juniors. If you finish the spring season in say May it means come late July you are already preparing for the next season. Virtually no one would be healthy enough to play. Whatever happens I do not really care but anyone who plays in spring will not be at 100% come August.

I think the SEC will play. They want to. Why shouldn’t they? Of course I do have a dog in this fight— my son is in MS State’s marching band, which rather requires a football game to play for. We bumped into the football coach when we were there last week and he was all full steam ahead, but of course the coaches are not the SEC leaders.

Money talks (and I'm not just talking TV revenues - bookies have connections).

It doesn't surprise me that the PAC## snowflaked out, but I was a bit surprised that the Big10 was so casual about the cash cow. I guess they really are just a basketball conference after all.

The Missouri coach did get the university president fired a few years ago.

Don’t you remember the USFL? There were quite a few players who played 30-ish games in a year (either college + USFL or NFL-USFL or USFL-NFL).

I do, one hundred percent. These conferences have asked for the data on why they can’t play, there is none. They’ve gotten second opinions from virologists and epidemiologists that totally disagree with Fauci and Birx, we are going to see whose right and I’m also one hundred percent sure it isn’t a Fauci!!

Two seasons in 2021 is never going to happen. The Big 10 just tossed that out to keep their players from transferring.

Also don’t be surprised if the Big10 changes their decision and plays this fall, Pac12 is hopeless, nobody on the West Coast cares about football

As a life long Alabama fan, 1960’s, they can GFT. No more season tickets or shirts or hats. It was a good run. Sorry Tua. You was in the right place but the wrong time.

The liberal governors in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania will not let them play. They are blaming Trump for their cancellation.

Well you are one of the few, I’ve lived here (Oregon Washington) my whole life and it’s changed, especially the past 10 years or so, it’s as if the people here are more interested in Metro Sexual crap than hard contact sports, which is why the Pac12 sucks BIG TIME when it comes to football!
