He got caught, but you can bet there’s dozens more like him with CIA, FBI, DOJ and DOD credentials and clearances doing the same damn thing and getting away with it! I fear that much of our national security has been compromised by these Deep State critters!

They’re like mice; if you see one you can be sure there are plenty of others around.

All who have family remaining in China are potential spies for the CP. Family is much more important to Chinese than to most Americans and CCP is happy to use threats to Grandma to elicit cooperation in America. That is less the case in 2nd and 3rd generation citizens but it is still a source of blackmail/extortion activity.

“including the identities of CIA officers and human assets”

Oh Good.

They’re all face down in a trench somewhere now.

No, but what tends to happen is that most ethnically-Chinese Americans tend to have family members back in China - which gives the Chinese government plenty of leverage against them. Saving myself typing by copying from an earlier post:

***

Another reason we’ve not been able to recruit Chinese nationals to spy for us is what the Chinese do to spies. They have been known to not just torture the spy to death, but ‘disappear’ and then torture and execute most of if not the entire extended family of the spy down to distant cousins, sometimes in front of the spy before finally killing the spy themselves.

Similar methods have been used to attempt to recruit Americans of Chinese descent; “Be a real shame if your Auntie Chun back in Shanghai found herself homeless and your Uncle Xiang lost his job and couldn’t get another,” that kind of thing. Or the reverse, offering blandishments to improve their relatives’ lives. Both have been reported repeatedly over the years.

Of course, this only works if the party they are attempting to blackmail or bribe actually *likes* the family left behind. Often the American-born or naturalized Americans don’t; there are reports of the recruiters being taken back when they are told that the target doesn’t like their relatives back in China, that doing nasty things to them would be a great favor and could they please send pictures after whatever deed was done?

Deep state under Bush.
Not knowing any details at all...
I suspect a clinton appointee holdover brought him in.

Evidence, you have to have evidence...being a Communist is not a crime...I think it is a crime and you think it is a crime...legally it is not...Hardly anyone knows what a Republic is; our Constitution is at risk...nothing stands between we Americans and communism but this POTUS, Donald J. Trump.

That all depends. Most of my family here hates the branch of the family back in Hong Kong for some perceived slight decades back. (I don’t like them for a separate reason - all the ones I’ve met are rude, stuck up pricks.) There’s been family stories of agents attempting to recruit a couple family members here in tech and defense industries (decades back) and being told not only “no,” but “When you torment them, could you please send me pictures/video of it? And let me know when you kill them, as I would like to throw a party to celebrate.” To which the recruiters look really puzzled and leave.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell if my particular family’s stories are true or not as all those relatives are still with us, or died years later of old age. That said, this recruiting tactic and result have been reported before by other Americans of Chinese descent and confirmed by various means.

China won’t care about one being caught, there are others to fill in the breach. Downright scary.

I know several Overseas Chinese from Sài Gòn and Nha Trang here in the local Vietnamese derived community. They are no longer Chinese having dropped Mandarin and their other Chinese languages in favor of Vietnamese and English and have been accepted totally by the người Kinh (Vietnamese majority) as Vietnamese. A particular friend who will say that he "was" Chinese says that the pressure is still there though intermittent and declining. It is easier for them because though they do have family that they know in China it is a few, for some four or five generations back and there is sparse communication with relatives in Hang Chow or Shanghai but there is not that feeling of intense connection.
