That all depends. Most of my family here hates the branch of the family back in Hong Kong for some perceived slight decades back. (I don’t like them for a separate reason - all the ones I’ve met are rude, stuck up pricks.) There’s been family stories of agents attempting to recruit a couple family members here in tech and defense industries (decades back) and being told not only “no,” but “When you torment them, could you please send me pictures/video of it? And let me know when you kill them, as I would like to throw a party to celebrate.” To which the recruiters look really puzzled and leave.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell if my particular family’s stories are true or not as all those relatives are still with us, or died years later of old age. That said, this recruiting tactic and result have been reported before by other Americans of Chinese descent and confirmed by various means.

I know several Overseas Chinese from Sài Gòn and Nha Trang here in the local Vietnamese derived community. They are no longer Chinese having dropped Mandarin and their other Chinese languages in favor of Vietnamese and English and have been accepted totally by the người Kinh (Vietnamese majority) as Vietnamese. A particular friend who will say that he "was" Chinese says that the pressure is still there though intermittent and declining. It is easier for them because though they do have family that they know in China it is a few, for some four or five generations back and there is sparse communication with relatives in Hang Chow or Shanghai but there is not that feeling of intense connection.
