California suffered a second day of rolling electricity blackouts on Saturday evening as the states power grid struggled to deal with a heat wave that caused a surge in consumer demand.
There was widespread public confusion, as the states electricity grid operator had said earlier in the day that no blackouts would be necessary.
Bay Area public radio station KQED reported:
The California Independent System Operator, the agency that manages the states complex power grid, had expressed optimism as late as 4:30 p.m. that no emergency declaration would be necessary.
An emergency Friday night formally known as a Stage 3 System Emergency had prompted [Pacific Gas & Electric] and other major utilities to conduct rotating blackouts in their service areas. The rolling outages were the first imposed in the state since the electricity deregulation crisis of 2001.
In the Bay Area, the most extensive Friday night outages took place in the North Bay. PG&E said those outages affected about 220,000 customers.
Saturday nights Stage 3 emergency occurred as most of California endured a second straight day of triple-digit temperatures. The demand for air-conditioning across the state drove consumption levels nearly as high as they had been on Friday.
Critics suggested that the blackouts should not have been necessary, since the state had contracted to buy more power than was demanded on Friday and Saturday.
Officials blamed the unexpected loss of a 470-megawatt power plant Saturday evening, as well as the loss of nearly 1,000 megawatts of wind power, the San Jose Mercury News reported. In addition, cloud cover over the desert meant solar energy was in short supply.

If only there was a safe, plentiful, cheap fuel that could be stored safely for years, right next to power plants, avoiding any supply chain issues...
I’m sure the Pelosi’s have ample fossil fuel generator power for her ice cream freezers.
Natural gas wins every time along with hydro. I sure wish I had a gas stove instead of this damn electric.
And them libs love they science.
Suck it up, Buttercups! LOL!
more rioting, government spending, less police, higher taxes, and less freedom; that’s the ticket!
Lack of moisture, trees and vegetation dried out. Fire season just getting started.
Burn that bitch down. Phuck Mexifornia. Put a stake through its heart.
PG&E, YOU LIE!
“green” energy powers California into a workers’ paradise ...
> DOH! Two solutions come to mind. Either more Bullet Trains, or more gun control. Hey, it’s cali. <
I think youre on the right track. But first they need to import more illegal alien gang-bangers.
This isn’t entirely unique to California, our national grid is old and becoming insufficient to cover demand and these eviro nazis want everyone to drive electric vehicles? Won’t it be special all those technological wonders that become useless bricks..................oh unless you drive a hybrid or cruise around with a generator in your trunk.
If only they had 1.21 Gigawatts they could go back in time and build more power plants.
Fire is burning pretty good near us.

Pretty standard for California’s democrat voters.
No offense to any California Freepers, but it’s hard for me, out in the flyover, to have any sympathy for a state that presumes to have the answers for everyone else, but year after year struggles with problems that are largely the result of, or are at least made worse by, their own fouled-up Democrat policies.
PA voice: Attention AOC and Commala Harris. Attention AOC and Commala Harris. Please pick up the nearest white courtesy telephones for an EMERGENCY MESSAGE.
LOL.
I wonder if we ever re-sourced those YUGE transformers that we could order from CHI-NUH with a year lead time.
That's a gas---- as the beatniks used to say.
With the solar and wind failing to reliably provide power including for hospitals, cooling units keeping insulin and perishables safe and buildings with no openable windows in withering heat wave, what will little spiteful Greta say?
Maybe: It's better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
And what's that stuff they use to run backup emergency generators for the hospitals and insulin? Gas. I doubt it's a solar panel array waiting for the Sun.
