If you speak to them through a window, you don’t need to go to the door. The idea of “Someone is beating on my door in the middle of the night. Let me open the door and find out what they want” is ignorant. Speaking to them through the door just tells them where you are. One of my neighbors got shot doing that.

I never answer my door for anyone I am not expecting. I go on my deck(10 feet up) and speak down to them. With a gun nearby.

Good post. I completely concur. The only reason my door gets opened to knocks or doorbell is if I am expecting visitors.
A sturdy and stout locked door provides extremely valuable time and distance.
Even then, I first look at my camera or through a window elsewhere in my home before unlocking door to verify it is my family/friends.

Shot by the police?

If I’m talking through the bathroom window, they know where I am. I’d just tell them to call me, or call dispatch and give them my number.
