Uber Claims It Faces Temp Shutdown in California After Ruling that Drivers Are Employees

Uber claims it may have to temporarily shut down in California after a judge ruled earlier this week that Uber and Lyft must classify their gig drivers as employees.

“If the court doesn’t reconsider, then in California, it’s hard to believe we’ll be able to switch our model to full-time employment quickly,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an interview Wednesday on MSNBC.

Valerie Jarrett is on the board of directors for Lyft, Ubers main competition. Funny nobody is ruling Lyft drivers as employees?

The law applies to Lyft too.

Here we see what happens when politicians put in a law designed to punish employers, sold to the people by telling them it's really to help workers. When it destroys lives of the workers the pols refuse to get rid of it because it's accomplishing its real goal: punish companies.

California, you know the remedy. Remove all democrats! Until you do that, try to enjoy your serfdom.

The decision as I read it elsewhere indicated that the ruling applied to Uber and Lyft. If truckers were able to get a court to rule that AB5 doesn’t apply to their industry, I can’t blame Uber and Lyft for seeking the same declaration. There’s that pesky interstate commerce rule, though... /s

“Quickly.”

Or at all.

Having driven for both uber and as a taxi allow me to say the reason rides are so cheap is cause they SNOOZLE their drivers and they don’t get the pros of being independent contractors, only the cons.

Yes the cheap rides were nice for the consumer. But they were financed by venture capitalists, abuse of employment law, and insurance fraud.

Here in San Francisco at least your taxi fare is the true cost of the ride, properly insured, and trust me the drivers are not getting rich.

Pepsi junkie, your post referred to uber as “employers.” You see that? They aren’t supposed to be employers. If they are they are supposed to subject to the same laws everyone else has to abide by.

I’d be happy to have them be fair to taxis - let US have as many cabs on the street as we want. Don’t make US subject to frequent surprise inspections. Don’t make US drug test yearly. Stop making US pay $200,000 for a medallion to operate!! So many rules uber doesn’t have to keep.

Sometimes it is better to do your homework before posting.

Good, treat them as employees, pay their insurance, pay for the use of cars, etc. will be interesting to see how their model works once they pay fairly.

The context of the article is about uber but if you are a musician or a programmer or an artist or ... so many professions ... their stupid law has put you out of work. People just aren’t going to pay a guitar player who plays during the dinner hour a few nights a week as a full time employee. they’d rather just drop him, turn on the restaurant radio and call it a day. When confronted by the fact that all the people she claimed she was trying to help had been put out of work by her bill, the sponsor in the legislature basically said to let them eat cake, suck it up because employers are getting crushed so the bill’s working.

I am an independent contractor, though not an Uber or Lyft driver, and I’m against this bill that purports to help independent contractors. We became independent contractors because we wanted the flexibility of contract work. If we wanted to be employees we would have applied for employee-type jobs. One size does not fit all.

I think they will lose this in the end, but maybe the State could Expand on it and include Nannies, housekeepers and gardners in the group that must be considered employee’s..

I support independent contractors. I am one.

Uber was/is a lying, abusive company. With their “do what I want ask permission after” and obvious bribery they destroyed so many hard working people who were playing by the rules. The only worse people are the transit authorities who were apparently paid off to look the other way.

If taxis are over regulated in some way then I am all for deregulation. But this was a thousand rules for thee, none for me. Now have fun paying off your taxi mortgage.

Agreed and this bill was not about protecting independent workers. It was all about trying to help the unions get more members in the private sector. It’s despicable.
