AMERICAN CITIES IN CATASTROPHIC DECLINE
Powerline ^ | August 10,2020 | BY JOHN HINDERAKER

Posted on 08/10/2020 5:53:30 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Rioting continues nightly in Portland. Criminals are arrested, immediately released, and return to the streets. It is hard to see how Portland has a viable future. Likewise with Seattle. A city that cannot maintain order will soon be vacated by normal people who are able to leave, leaving only criminals and those without the means to get away. Minneapolis, with its days of rioting followed by skyrocketing crime and parks turned into tent encampments, is not far behind. Panic is spreading among people who own houses and (worse) condominiums there.

Then there is Chicago, where mass looting took place last night. Thieves struck on Michigan Avenue, the premier shopping venue

One notable feature of these videos is the absence of law enforcement. Police are hopelessly outnumbered, and looters, rioters and arsonists arrogantly assume that they can steal and burn to their hearts’ content with no interference.

Unfortunately, they are right. Few are arrested, those that are arrested are immediately set free, and the likelihood of criminal prosecution is negligible, especially in cities that have Soros-installed prosecutors who have pledged not to prosecute.

None of this is remotely viable, obviously. Through history, the normal practice has been to shoot looters. Rightly or wrongly, we are no longer willing to do that. The result, evidently, is that order cannot be maintained. Black Lives Matter sponsors riots and loot-fests, like the one last night in Chicago, with the apparently enthusiastic backing of big business and with not a word of criticism from any Democratic Party politician. What does Joe Biden think of Black Lives Matter-sponsored rioting, arson and looting? Maybe someday someone will ask him.

At some point, a society becomes too stupid to survive. I am not sure we have arrived at that point yet, but we may be getting close.

You can tell when shopping at certain national chain stores they are stocking less and less stuff.

From the article: Through history, the normal practice has been to shoot looters. Rightly or wrongly, we are no longer willing to do that.

Progtard DildoCrat politicians are unwilling to shoot looters, and actively prevent their police forces from doing so.

Citizens are under no such constraint, however. If this spills out of the usual reliably leftist sh!tholes, the body count is going to be epic.

Well, duh. That's because they're tied up keeping an eye out for rogue barbers and hairdressers plying their trade on the sly. Staking out grassy areas fronting lakes and ponds lest some scofflaw family gather for a picnic.

And SOMEbody's gotta patrol those playgrounds in Jewish neighborhoods. God, Himself, had to put all His activities on hold and keep an eye on those stiff-necked people in the form of a cloud by day and a fire by night because they stubbornly refused to obey a few simple Commandments (if I remember the movie correctly).

I really don’t know. Minneapolis was a premium real estate market for decades. Property values were high and single family houses were well above the national average.

This is an overgeneralization. We are talking about radical Demo'rat run cities where incredibly stupid Marxist city govts thought they could now set up a socialist paradise as a shining light on a hill.

Now they are finally realizing (incredibly) that they cannot administer city services without revenues; not only are ruined businesses not paying taxes but tax paying citizens are leaving. Shutting down city services such as police can offer some relief, but their main hope was a promise by Nancy Pelosi to grab big Fed stimulus dollars to bail them out. POTUS has thrown a monkey wrench into those fantasies.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. :^)

I’ve mentioned this here before, but I follow a financial podcaster out of Chicago whose GF is a real estate agent. He’s said, for the last month/month-and-a-half-or-so, that all of her clients have been asking her to get them the hell out of Chicago, and (having endured the Covid lockdowns) to find them a place with a yard, or at least a porch. (Basically “NOT A HIGHRISE!”.) With an unspoken understanding of “whatever the price”.

He also recently said he understands that Catholic schools in Wisconsin and Indiana are currently deluged with last-minute applications from Illinois.

What’s really telling is the high number of people who work in Chicago and live in Gary Indiana. From what I understand, Gary is a one hour train ride to Chicago. You can have basically the same commute in the Chicago area with a lot more taxes and hassle.

Well, if things get bad enough (as I observed studying the collapse of Chicago’s West Side in the 1950s and 60s), when things get bad enough, you’ll be forced to cut your losses. (Preferably sooner rather than later.)

One of the more heartbreaking stories I read was of an Italian-American couple, that made a retirement investment of a three-flat in Chicago’s west side North Lawndale neighborhood, for about $15,000, around 1948...a decade later, when the neighborhood was in freefall, the widow didn’t even get $1000 for it.

I don’t have a recent South Shore Line schedule at hand...but Gary should be less than an hour’s direct ride from Chicago, objectively speaking. I suspect many of the “Gary” riders actually live in nearby Merrillville and Schererville (which exploded as people escaped Gary’s collapse in the early 1970s) and drive to a nearby stop like Hammond or Miller, both of which straddle Gary.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to visit a large American city, knowing they could be robbed, beaten or murdered while the police are ordered by the city’s mayor to stand down?

Anyone in a large American city with means must be planning their move out of town.

My sons wife’s family lived in downtown Chicago close to the Trump building. They sold out and moved to Florida three years ago, they have no regrets.

And people are locked down at home in many places, only able to shop.

I see it mainly in craft supplies. Not sure about dedicated hobby venues, but Walmart is being bought to the back of the shelf in many items.

I’m ordering items online from small individual websites where at all possible,

Somebody had to have voted for the Dims and their policies that created his chaos. My worry is that they will among the people leaving, but they won't leave their politics that created this mess behind.

Democrat mayors are allowing this to happen because they feel it’ll help Biden get elected. It’s an old commie trick.
