A huge blast rocked a military base in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu near a stadium on Saturday, killing at least eight people and injuring 14, emergency workers said, and the militant group al Shabaab claimed responsiblity.

Soldiers opened fire after the explosion which sent clouds of smoke into the sky...

Somalia has been embroiled in deadly violence since 1991, when clan warlords overthrew leader Siad Barre and then turned on each other.

Since 2008, al Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow the internationally-recognised central government and establish its rule based on its own interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

Looks like business as usual.

Witnesses who saw the blast occur, told local media that a car loaded with explosives driven by a suicide bomber was detonated inside a military facility home to the 27th brigade of Somalia’s national army.

The targeted military base is located right behind newly renovated Mogadishu stadium which was earlier targeted with mortar bombs during its inaugural ceremony and since then has been closed to all football events.

The explosion could be heard across the capital city, according to residents in Mogadishu.

No one has yet claimed responsibility, but the Islamist group Al-Shabaab often carries out bombings and direct attacks targeting security forces, government officials and foreign troops in Somalia.
