Eh? Whats wrong with celestial navigation?
Stars are visible even in broad daylight. Maybe not to the human eye, but they are detectable with modern (as of late 1970s technology) sensors.
Hell, give everyone a map.
Hey, I had to use one.
Incoming!
5.56mm
Currently, as I understand it, the technology exists where missiles can use a topographical course, based on stored topo maps. So, this magnetic field thing, accurate to 30 feet may be some disinformation. I could see where it might be a good backup, in the event the Chinese spoof our gps signals, which is how China/Iran got one of our drones to land at their airport.
If anything, it will keep the Chinese guessing, and they aren’t now going to spend a fortune to jam/spoof gps.
“The Air Force, wary of losing its GPS satellites during a major war”
No crap. Only took them 30 years to realize that China, Russia, and probably other countries would knock our GPS in 5 minutes, if a war started.
One would hope they would have considered alternatives already.

This thread is fascinating. Thanks for posting...
What are there guys smoking? 30 feet? DGPS is sub one foot right now, commercially! Add to the fact that the North Pole is heading to Siberia at a rate not seen in a long time. Ugh!
Ya gotcha your high frquencies and then ya gotcha low frequencies...
With our Super Heterodyne Acoustatronic DeLuxe Headset you can catch them all.
Act now and we'll include the motor for easy smooth turret operation at no cost to you!...batteries not included.
shipping and handling charges will apply.
I enjoyed the thread.
My son is an aerospace engineer. He works on a satellite mission as a flight operations engineer for an array of several satellites that study the earth’s magnetic fields.
I have no idea the science behind them but wonder if some of their data might be influencing this. No clue.
He doesn’t know much either. He’s on the operations side not the physics end of it.
Put a Canada Goose in the nose of the B2 and guide off that? I doubt Trudeau would approve!
I’m skeptical, if only because the recent and continuing movement of the north magnetic pole across the arctic towards Siberia from its previous slow-moving stroll away from Greenland. A “north pole” reference point moving two hundred kilometers per year makes aiming aircraft and bombs and rockets and long range gunnery that need to hit within 5 meters very difficult.
Yes, the north magnetic is crossing the line between the geographic north pole and the international date line this summer. Weakening also. The south magnetic pole? Little change!
I’m glad I did not hear that punishment.
The GPS grid doesn’t belong to the Air Force but to the Americans taxpayers.
“I have seen my compass do that in some places in the dead stream swamp of Missaukee County, MI.”
I was using ADF to get back to my homeport in Middle Tennessee, then I flew over some TVA transmission lines. The ADF went bonkers for several minutes.
That's a good backup move...

My 2 years at Kami Seya Navy Base, I bought a ‘52 Studebaker from a Navy First Class who had re-upped and had a new car waiting at his next duty station. That car was ugly as homemade soap, but I had a ball with it.
