COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — In a second test administered Thursday in Columbus, Governor Mike DeWine tested negative for COVID-19. First Lady Fran DeWine and staff members also all tested negative for COVID-19, according to the governor’s office. The negative test comes on the same day Gov. DeWine tested positive after he took a test for COVID-19 as part of the standard protocol to greet President Donald Trump on the tarmac at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland.

An antigen COVID-19 test is done to detect the current presence of the virus. It doesn’t test for current immunity which does the serological test that looks for antibodies specific to the virus.

Most hospitals are having trouble placing patients in my regions because of this exact phenomena. They cannot go to SNF without two negatives 72 hours apart so I literally have people stuck in the hospital walking the floors totally recovered who test negative nd positive in succession because of the PCR and LRI nature of the disease. And yes, they are counted in the daily total. Its a hell of a way to practice medicine.

Of course that’s a reasonable assumption.
Other explanations- such as that it was an error are reasonable too.

Would love to see more application of antigen tests.
Despite their limits they would be a terrific public health tool.
Especially in schools.

I haven’t rechecked, so my information may be outdated, but initially the signs were that the PCR tests were showing exposure, not merely infection. So, they could test positive earlier than the tests for whether you had COVID, and long-term after as well. It also appeared to test positive for folks that had been exposed to even viral fragments, and had not created an immune response.

A friend of mine wife was told, by her employer, she has possibly been in contact with another employee who has COVID-19. So she was sent home with 20 other people. She ordered a test and went to the testing location. She waited around for an hour and never got help and left. 3 days later she was informed that she tested positive for COVID.

Why would they give someone about to meet the prez an antigen test? The PCR is the better test for current infection.

FWIW, I think the prez deserves better than quicker and cheaper. If someone is getting near him, use the better test.

But “the better test” takes very much longer.
He can’t wait for that.

The quicker test is faulted for missing less infectious people.
“Infectiousness” is what we want to keep from Trump.

Then the “less accurate” tests should be thrown out of the overall count. Maybe retermed “precautionary”. And their results should not be used to shape public policy. Only “accurate” tests should be counted.
