New York AG seeks to dissolve NRA in lawsuit accusing leaders of self-dealing, causing $64 million in losses

New York Attorney General Letitia James was set to announce Thursday that the state is seeking to dissolve the National Rifle Association in a lawsuit that accuses the leadership of the flagging nonprofit of diverting millions of dollars for their own personal use.

According to the lawsuit, the senior leadership of the NRA squandered millions in donations on personal trips, private jets and expensive meals. The failure to lawfully manage the organization’s funds contributed to losses of $64 million over three years, the suit says.

James is asking the court to dissolve the NRA and require each of the current and former executives named in the suit to pay full restitution. The suit argues that the four executives, including CEO Wayne LaPierre, shouldn’t be permitted to ever again serve on the board of a New York charity.

The suit continues a long-running battle between the state and the gun-rights group, which has been chartered in New York since 1871. James, who is a Democrat, threatened to investigate the NRA’s nonprofit status during her campaign for attorney general and likened the group in 2018 to a “terrorist organization.”

The Red/ Blue divide is irreconcilable. NRA should have seen this coming under BHO. NRA should have re-chartered in a red state.

It was explained that the chief purpose of the NRA is to teach shooting skills

The chief purpose of the NRA is to stuff Wayne LaPierre's bank account.

I'm a Life Benefactor member. I get a lot of calls from the fundraising division. Every time my answer is the same... "Not one dime until that thieving LaPierre is out!"

If there’s corruption, the corrupt people should pay. But the NRA should remain.

Funny how she isn’t going after The Clinton Foundation for the same charges. Seems like more fertile ground.

Chelsea’s $ multi million wedding was paid for by Foundation.

Donations to Clinton Foundation were squandered by the entire Clinton family.

Who paid for Chelsea’s $10 million condo in NYC???

This lawsuit’s goals are overly-broad, but LaPierre does have some “accounting” to do and should answer for them...

The NRA needs to get out of New York and move to somewhere friendlier...like Texas.

The problem has been, and continues to be, the fact that when anyone, and I mean anyone brings up the costs incurred, and reimbursement for expenses, for LaPierre and others, concerning the irregularities, they are pressured and vilified into resigning or being removed by fiat.

Oliver North was looking into it and he was forced out, along with a couple of others at the top of the org and some of the Board of Directors.

As a Life member, I have been calling for a complete audit of the books to determine if there has been any shenanigans with the finances.

Until those questions are answered, I won't contribute one thin dime more. It's the members monies, and if used in violation of, not only the NRA requirements as a 501(c)4 org, or state and Federal law, those individuals involved should spend a lot of time behind bars and pay restitution.

But Leticia can dream all she wants about disbanding the NRA.

She might lose her job(or a lot worse) doing something worthwhile like that.

Some one should ask her about the timing of the announcement. 90+ days out from the election.

She’s not using her office to try and influence the election, or is she?

I think we all know the answer.

She might also want to see if she can find any trace of that $850M De Blasio's wife stole misplaced.

Gun owners are as divided as gun owners and gun opponents are divided.

It’s a 2020 political party election campaign gimmick.

Her, Cuomo, Biden and Obama think they can rally folks around their ban the NRA campaign.

With more folks than ever, of all “races”. buying guns legally since the riots and lawlessness started, the New York AG’s chances of political success on the maneuver are nil.

I am not going to sit here and defend La Pierre- I do think that he (and probably others) have corruptly used funds not belonging to them.

But how do you get from potentially criminal actions on the part of a very small number of people, to shutting down an organization dedicated to preserving an enumerated civil right with 5 million + members? This is nothing more or less than a purely political decision, masquerading as a legal act by a state official.

Letitia James can phuck herself with a running chain saw.

The purpose of this is to knock the NRA off base because it tends to help Trump and the Republicans politically. Operation Cancel Culture.

Why on Earth has the NRA kept its corporate registration n NY instead of moving to a free state? NY’s AG can add that to her list of mismanagement claims.
