Of all tyrannies.... (C.S. Lewis quote)
Me | August 5th, 2020 | Hildy

Posted on 08/05/2020 9:20:06 AM PDT by Hildy

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)

This is the foundation of the “Karen” phenomenon.

Do-good busy-bodies gone wild, these days.

I wonder if this stems more from one sex?

Um...no I don’t.

I would point out that the robber barons, bankers aside, made their fortunes by providing goods people wanted, often with a level of quality they wanted, at a price they found desirable.

To early progressives building wealth on the backs of voluntary commerce was repugnant, and they lied to opine that honest men couldn’t do it and become fabulously wealthy.

There are abuses possible under capitalism (and once already successful too many “robber barons” indulged in them) where all forms of socialism are inherently abuses and abusive ... solutions so good that they have to be mandatory.

Meanwhile the industrialists, these robber barons, made nations industrial, prosperous and helped many to better lives without filling the land with graves the way socialists later did.

We should consider ourselves blessed that we had robber barons rather than only socialists! And where fools traded industrialists for government busy bodies and crooked politicians they trade future prosperity for comforts and then a comfy serfdom (and then an inevitable not-so-comfy serfdom).

These days the over abundance of soy has changed that equation.

Spot on. We are being “protected” from ourselves at every turn today.
