Poll: Tommy Tuberville leads Doug Jones by 17 points in Alabama Senate race

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Tuberville has a 17-point lead over incumbent Democratic Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama, according to a Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.

The survey of 650 likely Alabama voters shows Tuberville ahead of Jones, 52 percent to 35 percent. Four percent said they would vote for someone else and 9 percent had no opinion.

Tuberville, who secured the Republican nomination after he defeated ex-U.S. Attorney General and erstwhile Sen. Jeff Sessions in last month’s GOP primary runoff, more than doubled his advantage over Jones from an earlier survey.

Back in February, Tuberville had an 8-point lead over Jones, 50 percent to 42 percent, according to an Alabama Daily News/Mason-Dixon poll. That survey was conducted before the initial GOP primary in March.

Tuberville is leading Jones among independent voters, 34 percent to 27 percent, according to the Morning Consult survey. Both candidates have wide leads among voters of their own parties; Jones leads among Democrats, 95 percent to 1 percent, while Tuberville has an overwhelming advantage among Republican voters, 87 percent to 4 percent.

Democratic strategist Joe Trippi, who is advising the Jones campaign, disputed the poll’s accuracy in an email to supporters. He said the campaign’s own polling shows the race a virtual tie.

“Sen. Jones is not down 17 points. We have the race as a virtual dead heat. And we are going to win,” Trippi said. “There is no way in hell Doug Jones is down by even double digits, much less 17 points. No way – period. Every metric we have seen – from rising support for the senator among suburban women to increased support with independents – points to this once again being a very close race.”

The Morning Consult poll was conducted from July 24 to Aug. 2 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4 percentage points.

No, Joe, Jones isn't down 17 points. It's MORE than that.

Alabama has a solid Republican majority and are especially fond of Pres. Trump. You can't get parity with Jones in such a political climate, Trippi. Stick to Yankee states, you don't know us!

Maybe Trippi is signaling that the RATs have a plan to steal the election?

I’m half joking here, of course. But whenever you think the RATs have plumbed the absolute depth of human depravity, they do something to surprise you.

Jones is there because too many could not stomach voting for Roy Moore so they stayed home.

Still waiting for signs the dems are going to "take back the senate."

No problem, their dynamic, charismatic nominee will have really, really long coattails....

...oh wait.

...and unless I am mistaken, Alabama is a hyoooge college football state. Quite possible more than any other (though I expect Texas might argue). Add that up with the rest of the formula, and this is just more proof that the media can’t resist trying to cheat a narrative and basically lie to their readers.

We all wanted to support that guy but that judge is a nut bag and a bit creepy. He has the charisma of a walnut to boot. Then that awful Sean Hannity interview. Nobody lost that race but him - And remember president Trump supported Luther something or other - who would have ultimately won.

Alabama's Ellen Craswell moment

Doug Jones is a dead man walking. He was exactly what he claimed he would not be on the campaign trail 2 years ago - nothing more than a mouthpiece for Chuck Schumer. He represented Democrat Party values, not Alabama values.

He will get several votes. People similar to Harvey Updyke, may he rest ... aw never mind, will vote for Jones because Tuberville was once our coach. He will get some from yellow dog democrats. Those are the ones who will vote for a yellow dog if it were running against a republican. And then, Never Trumpers will vote for Jones because Trump endorsed Tubbs.

In addition, most of the media, especially al.com/The Birmingham News are left-leaning rags. They are constantly appalled at the people of Alabama and our conservative views.

“Jones is there because too many could not stomach voting for Roy Moore so they stayed home.”

It’s true. Has Luther Strange or Mo Brook won the run-off, they’d have beaten Jones.

If you look at Roy Moore electorally, he has underperformed the rest of the GOP ticket in Alabama. You could absolutely make the argument that the only reason Moore won is that he was pulled in by the rest of the GOP ticket.

When it became a one on one situation (as it was with Jones), he couldn’t pull it off. Of course, the late allegations against Jones didn’t help matters or the fact that Jones campaigned as a moderate reasonable democrat.
