It may more likely have been sodium nitrate (as other reports indicated: https://www.wsj.com/articles/lebanon-struck-by-blast-at-beirut-port-11596556605 ).
That is rocket propellant, and Hizbollah is in the business of building their own - at the direction of their bosses in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Unmixed ammonium nitrate is not as explosive -its fertilizer. It can be mixed with diesel fuel oil to make an improvised explosive (ANFO), but Sodium Nitrate is more of a military grade substance. It was a Hizbollah facility, and there were a series of secondary detonation in the fire, before the big one went off - possibly other munitions or components.
Fireworks just sounds like a BS cover story, as does ammonium nitrate - Hizbollah is trying to avoid blame for having a mountain of high explosives downtown, and mishandling them.
No, ammonium nitrate blows up just fine by itself. It produces oxygen when it explodes, so if you mix it with a fuel like diesel or even sawdust, you get an even bigger bang, because oxygen at high pressure and temperature will cause any fuel to explode.

Saltpeter is actually potassium nitrate. Stump remover, and to my knowledge, cannot go off like Ammonium nitrate, which has the ability to transition from deflagration to detonation. According to wiki, this can occur with impurities.
It’s evidently similar to the Ammonium perchlorate rocket fuel, which can do the same (look up the Nevada rocket fuel plant explosion).
It will be interesting to know if this was a AN dump going up, or was it a Hazbollah ammo dump going up. Hezbollah sure was quick to deny involvement!

There is a fire and lots of smaller explosions, many of which appear to be like fireworks first, and then the massive explosion. The second explosion was apparently in a building next to the original fire. You can see that on videos from Beirut.
