At the beginning of the year, it looked like Jeremy Miller and his 9-year-old daughter were finally going to have a home of their own. Theyd been homeless and relying on family, shelters and motels for housing. But hed found stable work in the Kern County oil fields and had enough money for an $875-a-month, two-bedroom rental in Bakersfield.
They moved into the apartment in March, and Miller lost his job within days. The pandemic caused a worldwide drop in demand for oil, triggering mass layoffs in the oil patch. Miller tried to find other work through a temp agency, but there were few jobs. Plus his daughters school closed down, making it even harder to take work.
He couldnt pay the rent. He started to get calls from the apartment managers and letters taped to his door telling him he was late on rent. In April, he got a notice threatening eviction if he didnt pay.

You reap what you sow voting for a POS such as Newsom. Deal with it.
Amen!
Well, at least one of many catastrophes that are about to happen in that very pathetically governed state.
California needs to abolish property taxes—it is an emergency!
Urban property values and populations are declining in the marxist Democrat controlled areas.
Theres still plenty of farm labor and management work available in Bakersfield and the rest of the valley. Do it for a year, and get your bearings on what to do next. It will pay the rent at least.
...”need to act now”?!
They’ve got to be f’n kiddin! He IS acting now. Just like they voted him to do. Destroy anything that resembles Capitalism. Dumb butts!
So I’d guess that most of the people struggling to pay their rent are receiving unemployment PLUS $600 a week. Could it be that the new TV was more important than the rent?
For the record, I’ve had two occasions of unemployment. One I was relatively prepared for and we rode it out OK. The other was a completely opposite story.
I did nothing but scramble to make money while looking for a job.
When I interviewed for the job I eventually got, I had to apologize for my green hands. It was oil paint from an apartment building I was painting.
I understand unemployment because I’ve been there but I also don’t accept excuses because I’ve been there.
And what will California do for hurting landlords? Property tax waived until 90 days after Covid-19? We all understand the renters side but government refuses to see the landlords side. California may be trying to prevent homelessness but causes a massive case of homelessness in the future by killing off landlords.
While this bleeding-heart article focuses on the tenant side of the equation, landlords are also facing a crisis, as they have lost their income due to government malfeasance. But you can bet the bank that property tax abatement will NOT be part of any government solution.
A Two-Bedroom for $875 a month? Seriously? A Two-Bedroom in Massachusetts would be at least $1600 a month, and that’s in the poorer areas.
Kind of like your great Chicago???
Anyone remember the “advice” Americans were given by the left during the real estate collapse?
Stop paying your mortgage.
Walk away from it.
Protest.
Blame Bush.
In the end, many Americans followed this advice and lost their homes and had their credit damaged.
I have a feeling that acting now wIll include onerous taxes on homeowners who sell their homes and other hidden financial penalties.
They will work to ensure none but the wealthy can afford to leave California.
Maybe the Democrat Party could chip in some money for rent.
Oops. I misread the headline.
But what I said above will happen to.
California is governed by criminals, and inhabited by imbeciles.
>>California may be trying to prevent homelessness but causes a massive case of homelessness in the future by killing off landlords.
I think you miss the point. California HATES the idea of private property. After they bankrupt all the landlords they’ll buy up the proerties for pennies and turn them into public housing. They’ll leverage that into destroying the property values of private homes until the state has a monopoly on housing and can assign it “according to need” or at least “according to Marxist social score”.
