Astronauts aim to splash down in the Gulf, avoiding the storm.

Two long-haul travelers taking a red-eye flight from the International Space Station are on track to land in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida panhandle on Sunday, working their way around Isaias’ rough weather.

Robert L. Behnken and Douglas G. Hurley, the astronauts who blasted off to the space station in May in the Crew Dragon capsule built and operated by SpaceX, the rocket company started by Elon Musk, pushed off from the orbiting outpost on Saturday night. They are ( scheduled to splash down at 2:48 p.m. Eastern time.)

They keep giving reasons why they are taking so long but I wonder if they are having trouble opening the door.

The SpaceX woman was tearfully crying as they ended the broadcast. The NASA man, not at all. He's like, this is what we've done for decades.

No trouble, the propellants used for the deorbit and reaction control thrusters is dreadfully toxic. They have to safe the system and vent all the propellants in the line. The system is pressure fed and once the burst disks are triggered the lines are full of full pressure propellants with the possibility of a thruster firing or leaking until the check valves are closed and the lines blow down through the thrusters to safe the system. Once the system is safe they lift the capsule on deck and check for concentration. The live feed shows guys in full biosuits and SCBA tanks checking the exterior they said ppm concentration of NTO on the live stream once that dilutes they will let them out.

I’m old enough to remember splashdowns in the ocean. When Apollo 13 landed, the teachers pushed in newfangled TVs on carts with cc programs. A Jerry rigged antenna, and we got the local channel covering the splashdown
