At this writing, there is a recent surge in widespread use by the public of facemasks when in public places, including for extended periods of time, in the United States as well as in other countries. The public has been instructed by media and their governments that one’s use of masks, even if not sick, may prevent others from being infected with SARS-CoV-2, the infectious agent of COVID-19.
A review of the peer-reviewed medical literature examines impacts on human health, both immunological, as well as physiological. The purpose of this paper is to examine data regarding the effectiveness of facemasks, as well as safety data. The reason that both are examined in one paper is that for the general public as a whole, as well as for every individual, a risk-benefit analysis is necessary to guide decisions on if and when to wear a mask.....
A study of 44 mask brands found mean 35.6% penetration (+ 34.7%). Most medical masks had over 20% penetration, while “general masks and handkerchiefs had no protective function in terms of the aerosol filtration efficiency.” The study found that “Medical masks, general masks, and handkerchiefs were found to provide little protection against respiratory aerosols.”

I liked the Frontline Doctor who described it as throwing a fistful of sand at a chain link fence. Will it block some of it? Yeah, but not really enough to do you any good.
Then add in the fact a lot of male mask-wearers these days also have beards, which lift the masks off the face and make them even more useless.
The peak of the Covid fatalities has already passed, less people are dying today than two or three months ago, yet the media-whipped mask hysteria is WORSE now than 2-3 months ago.

They just as obviously have minimal value in preventing healthy people from contracting the virus through inhaling such droplets. We aren't talking about virus particles - which don't, as in the common mosquito/chain link fence analogy, fly around in the air by themselves.
Bottom line is that there is no scientific basis for mask mandates. They can't even agree on whether asymptomatic patients are infectious - if they are not then masks have no value to the healthy at all.
Scientific studies are so last century. It’s all about the emotion now.

Masks and the Chinese Communist Party virus will be gone on Nov 4th.
But here’s what doesn’t make sense ...
We have to wear masks because (we’re repeatedly told) the virus is “highly contagious” ... but we also now know that the virus arrived here in Nov./Dec., and the mask-wearing and shutdowns didn’t begin until March ...
So - for 3+ months everybody was going around, no mask, socializing at Christmas, New Year’s, football playoff parties, etc. ... but if the virus is really so “highly contagious”, then most people have already had it
Remember that really super-bad “flu” you had last winter, like nothing you ever had before? That was corona.
So the current mask hysteria is unjustified and useless. But it suits the agenda of certain people and groups, so it continues.

The country had Covid shut down. Then apparently, some Chinese brought the disease in via smuggling, or some such.
The country is big on masks, this week mandating masks in Hanoi, and almost closing Da Nang.
This version of Covid is supposed to be much quicker to infect than the original version.
Keep an eye on Vietnam. If masks work, they should control this pretty quickly.
If not, then maybe not so much.
But Vietnam did beat it once already, just saying.
I get the feeling Trump thinks the ChiComs deliberately re-infected Texas and Florida using that Houston consulate as a base of operations. That’s the point at which he flip-flopped on masks.
I agree with your main point, but nothing prevents individual virus particles or groups of particles from becoming airborne without a substrate or remaining airborne when the substrate evaporates. I think you will find this article interesting:
