No, prudent would be to remove them from that kind of situation and care for them at home. NOT to leave them in that death camp, in complete isolation.
It’s abuse to house them in such a place. A generation ago, the elderly stayed at home with a relative.
Take them home and care for them there... these homes should go out of business.
Wow. In MA we have been back in visiting mode for almost a month. It is pretty strict and socially distant...but weve visited the MIL every week for a while.
The problem is teleconferencing with a demented person. You need third person who knows the players in order to keep it from completely devolving. I saw it done a few times. If it werent sad it might have been funny.
I appreciate what you are saying. The issue is that within the building this stuff spreads so far, so fast that one case can wipe out a floor in no time. I saw it go through a home here in MA. One day they were fine...two weeks later 72 dead. It was frighteningly fast.
I guess someone might opt for home care in the scenario you suggest.
Exactly right. My mom went swiftly downhill as soon as she was locked down—kept away even from other residents. At her death, the facility had to “bend” the rules severely so that my sister and I could sit by her bedside. The other residents (also breaking rules) came out to thank us for forcing the issue. They could not care less about dying of the virus; they care greatly that they might die without touching their loved ones.
That’s a good point on dementia. And don’t wear a black shirt when talking to a dementia patient. To some, it makes the wearer look like a scary, floating head.
“Its prudent. Protect the vulnerable. One case would spread like wildfire.”

Sunday I was finally able to get in and see my dad. I hadn’t seen him since April 16. He has lost 20# and is so pale that his dentures look tan.
He has been neglected as we pay $4500 a month for his care. I was able to hire in companions for him. I am afraid to think of his condition w/o the girls seeing him.
The facility focused so much on the virus, the forgot about humans needing to live. Prisoners in solitary get one free hour a day. Not my dad.
I think if residents had the choice, they would choose to live freely and risk covid. Right now they are not living. They are rotting.
yep...literally makes me cry. Many of these residents are in their right mind and may be there because of a hip break or whatever. They can’t see the ones they love when some of them are very old and that is really what makes them happy and gets them through.
Another thing no one is thinking about are psychiatric wards for younger kids. My friend adopted a child who just turned 16. She was going thru some things and not handling it well so she chose to be admitted. This young girl sat there for several months alone because they didn’t want anyone coming in during the height of things. I’m having trouble with all of this...
Just told my wife about this. In the nursing home she works at in MO, they allow the residents to go outside and sit at a table, 6 foot long, across from their visitors.
Not every family has the ability to take in and care for an elderly family member — lack of safe bedrooms/bathrooms and no money for renovations, not enough income for someone to stay home all day or pay in-home nurses, worries about them starting fires or wandering, or becoming paranoid, delusional and/or abusive (often happens with dementia)
“Live free or die” has multiple layers of meaning.
For me, I choose quality of life over quantity of days.
And, by the way, PLEASE breathe on me!
My immune system needs a workout.
Seriously.
The nursing home my friend was in got help from staff......they were very caring..
..
When will they be allowed to visit? When Wolf and Levine have killed everybody off.
