Florida Is A Case Study In Media-Induced COVID-19 Panic
Issue & Insights ^ | 7/27/2020 | I & I Editorial Board

What do all these news accounts have in common?

“Florida Sets Yet Another Coronavirus Record: 173 Deaths In A Day.”

...

“The 134 new confirmed deaths is the second-largest increase on record, coming five days after the largest one-day jump of 156 last week.”

...

So what characteristic do all of the reports share? They are all false.

...

All of these scary headlines are based on the number of deaths reported by the state on any given day. This is not the same as the number of deaths that occurred on those days.

The difference might seem trivial. But it’s crucial because the press is using the timing of Florida’s death reports to whip up a frenzy about COVID-19 running riot in the state.

Take a look at the chart below. The blue bars are the number of deaths reported in four days last week. Notice the sharp uphill climb? That’s the story the press has been telling.

But those deaths didn’t occur on those days. In fact, the vast majority of them occurred days, or even weeks, before. The actual date of these deaths is indicated by the orange bars.

In fact, as of Sunday, the biggest one-day death toll so far in the state happened back on July 16, when 114 are known to have died. And when the press was claiming that 2,013 had died in July, the actual number of known deaths was 1,847.

As we noted in this space last week, this distortion is being repeated by the media in state after state that has seen a recent spike in coronavirus cases. While deaths attributed to coronavirus have increased, the “surge” is a fiction because many of those deaths happened earlier.

More media distortions are discussed in the full article. The punchline is:

The question that deserves to be answered is why the mainstream press seems so willing and eager to whip up fear, rather than provide all the relevant facts, in context, so the public can make its own informed decisions about how to respond to this disease.

Of course, we know the answer to that already.

I've known this for some time now. The Florida DoH dashboard changes daily. Day X will show 5 deaths on day X+1, but by day X+5 they've ramped it up to 20 or 30 or more.

I no longer believe anything the Florida DoH says.

I regret to inform you that after you die you will register and vote Democrat. It is tradition.

We have had the exact same type of number game going on with the Department of Health in Washington State for months. This will all go away on Wednesday November 4, but they are going to keep the nonsense going until then.

Why wouldn’t it change? If County B takes 5 days to report the deaths for Day X, what would you like the DoH to do about it? Pretend the deaths didn’t happen?

Revised numbers happen for everything. We revise numbers for the economy months and even YEARS after, as more data becomes available and we get additional context about what was happening in places that weren’t necessarily represented in the original numbers.

You don’t just pretend the new information doesn’t exist; you correct the information you have.

Very interesting chart! Thank you for posting this. Deaths are already a lagging indicator, and on top of that they’re often not reported until some time has passed for various reasons (I usually blame the inefficiencies of local governments).

Lagging is a tool of the left. When cases rise they say you just wait for all that death, ignoring the fact that deaths per case is about 1/4 of what it was in April. And they are ignoring that there's very little lag when serious cases are reported upon hospitalization and the new younger cases do not result in death.

When cases fail, they say something else, e.g. dust off the story of the "young and healthy DJ" one more time.

The problem is our education system. Have you ever talked to these “journalists”. Most are Ted Baxter/Bill Kurtis empty shirts with a pretty face.

It couldn’t possible be that Florida was targeted because it was the site of a certain nominating convention.

The media/democrats are responsible for this mass hysteria.
