Cancel the New York Times
Claremont Review of Books ^ | 07/23/20 | Richard Samuelson

It pains the native New Yorker in me to say it, but if names have to keep up with the times, then, surely, the Times has to change its name. New York State, New York City, and the New York Times ought not to glorify James, Duke of York, notorious slave trader that he was. Do woke New York Times reporters really want to work at an institution named for such a man? Isn’t it a trigger just to walk into a building bearing that name? Apparently, New York City is finally going to remove the tiles in the Times Square subway station that may or may not represent a Confederate Flag. Surely it’s time the paper itself followed suit.

What might replace “New York”? One option for New York City would be to adopt the city’s nickname, “Gotham.” As Gotham is an old English term for the village of idiots (the English used to tell humorous stories about “the wise men of Gotham”) there’s a certain logic to that.

New York State was nicknamed "The Empire State" long ago. The actual origin of New York's nickname is unknown, but some sources credit it to George Washington. In an April 10, 1785 letter to New York City Mayor James Duane, George Washington called New York "the Seat of the Empire". Washington is also said to have used the phrase "Pathway to Empire" once when referring to the state in conversation with Governor George Clinton in the 1790s; no documentation exists for this exchange, however.

How can any self-respecting Wokester live in a place that glorifies "EMPIRE"? That word is indicative of white superiority, global conquest, colonization, and subjugation of inferior peoples around the globe. Even worse, the origin of the nickname is most likely George Washington himself, the Father of our Nation!!

Ergo, not only does "New York" have to go, but "Empire State" has to go as well. It MUST be renamed "State Number 11" out of respect to all POCs. Whitey should kneel when they rid us of these horrible monikers.

Empire is to western of a word. The concept is fine though under the right circumstances. What would a wokester say about the word Caliphate, perhaps?

The NYTs was financed from the sweat of slaves. BLM should take possession of the entire operation. Just reparation?

"Hands off the Inland Empire."

Good point, but which one? The Inland Northwest—historically and alternatively known as the Inland Empire—is a region of the Northwest centered on the Greater Spokane Area, that includes all of Eastern Washington and North Idaho:

Not many wokesters objecting to "Empire" here in the Idaho Panhandle.

I was thinking of the Imperial Valley, but anywhere that’s not coastal is better than oceanfront areas.

Goodness gracious, there are numerous alternatives that are just as well suited to do the job. Los Angles Times, Washington Post, Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, to name just a few. 8>)

No that would be Oregon. After all, Portland was the backdrop for the TV series Grimm. 8>)

The witches brew state might be appropriate for Massachusetts. 8>)

I think Gotham has a ring of truth to it for New York. 8>)

They could just rename the city! Hey, since all those “wokesters” are anti-semetic anyway, why don't they use the name one of their great leaders Jesse Jackson used, “Hymie town”

“”As Gotham is an old English term for the village of idiots (the English used to tell humorous stories about “the wise men of Gotham”) there’s a certain logic to that.””

That fits....especially for the city where the idiot voters have the say over who gets into office. The state voters don’t have any influence; they may as well stay home on election days. They didn’t put Schumer, Hillary, Cuomo, Gillibrand, and so many other nutcases in office...

I figured you were thinking of the Inland Empire in SoCal. Not many people know there’s a second one here in the Northwest.

Thanks. Yes, being a Northern Californian, I know the SoCal Inland Empire well and that’s what most people think when they hear “Inland Empire.”
