CBS News: Grim virus death toll projected in Sweden after lax approach
CBS News via MSN ^ | 07/22/2020

Swedish health officials said Tuesday that at least another 3,000 deaths from the coronavirus are likely in the country, known for its controversial softer approach to curbing the spread and much higher death toll than its neighbors. The projection comes from one of three potential scenarios presented in a report from the country's Public Health Agency on Tuesday.

In the worst scenario, where COVID-19 was expected to follow a traditional pandemic trajectory, over 4,400 more deaths related to the virus could follow.

That would nearly double the 5,646 deaths, out of 78,166 confirmed cases, that have been recorded since the start of the pandemic.

However, they said a more likely scenario would see clusters of new cases around the country which would then quickly subside.

That is a scenario "we've seen now in different parts of the world, and which seems like something that COVID-19 is creating more than most other diseases," state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at a press conference.

In the report the agency noted that this was a possible scenario where "infectivity increases quickly due to people for example socialize more frequently," but would then decrease "when people become aware of the outbreak and follow recommendations on distancing."

The added death toll from this scenario was estimated at nearly 3,250.

Despite the grim projections, the Public Health Agency said there were positive signs of the epidemic slowing down.

"In Sweden, the positive trend with a fairly quick decline in cases continues," Tegnell said, noting that especially serious cases in need of intensive care were down to a handful a day.

In the mildest scenario presented, in which the spread of the virus follows current trends, just over 1,100 additional deaths were expected.

Unlike most European nations, Sweden never imposed a lockdown

Sweden peaked in April, their death count is now negligible and showing no signs of climbing.

Dying from covid-19 or dying with Covid-19?

Sweden isn’t testing everybody and their pet rock like we are so those numbers are pretty useless.

Death rates are going to settle into a certain normalized range worldwide.

Unless there are places where they’re still shoving them into nursing homes.

explain something to me.

this virus seems to be based on the age and preexisting conditions of each person exposed

so if you are predisposed to a bad reaction to it, that bad reaction will happen whether you are exposed now or whether six months from now. So it doesn’t matter when you get it in terms of your long term survival.

Other than exposing so many people that we overwhelm hospitals is there any reason we should not be going for exposing lots of people now to get this pandemic in our rear view mirror? so we can return to normalcy quicker.

This another example of the media again selectively lying, by omission.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Sweden has less per-capita deaths than San Marino,Belgium, Andorra,UK,Spain and Italy. Just a "bit" worse than France and USA.

I miss those carefree pre-coronavirus days when nobody ever died.

The difference is that they took it hard up front, then it’s over.

For us it’s just spread out over a longer time because of the shelter in place, masks etc.

In both cases you’ll get a similar amount of total people being exposed and that is why the numbers started to rise again when we lifted all these restrictions. We are NOT going to stop the spread of this.

But like everything, everyone will twist it to mean what they want and they will have their “science” to prove their point.

Isn’t it about time for Hollywood to make a movie on this subject showing how the US liberal position (whatever that is - usually a mirror image of whatever the democratic party is advocating at the moment) is ethical and logical and how the world is cured of all its ills once we odopt that position?

Sweden would have been much better off had they done a better job protecting the vulnerable in long term care facilities. That was a huge chunk of their deaths. Even they acknowledge that. Otherwise they did just fine.

I’m sure someone can dig up charts that show we did far better than Sweden.

Numbers and science no longer matter. We live in a world of “new math, different versions of the truth, relativism.”

In America everything is political, even a virus, the weather, your plastic shopping bag, car you drive, or oil you use to cook with. Anything politics touches gets distorted. Reality is just whatever version you decide on based in what flag you’re rallying behind.

Just like climate.
I project that all living Swedes will die ... eventually. Very few of them from Covid.

We’ve flattened the curve so we haven’t reached our peak yet. Maybe by labor day.

The title says “Deaths” but the explanation on the graph says “deaths per million”. You are correct that any comparison of totals would be ridiculous. This is true for any data regarding the C virus.

We have about 30 times as many people as Sweden.
Any way you cut it, 12000 deaths A-day that be 500 every hour, here in the United States doesn’t Seem like we’ve done anything smart

If you check the numbers, the death rate for confirmed cases in Sweden is lower than that of New York.
