'The Arena': One Long Hour of Social Justice Agitation with Backdrop of Basketball

TNT and Bleacher Report supplied the television platform Monday night, Jemele Hill, Killer Mike, Gregg Popovich and others provided the fireworks on The Arena, a forum for social justice agitation in a basketball setting. It was the first of five consecutive nights of this social justice extravaganza, which continues through Friday.

Killer Mike Render, a rapper and actor (seen in photo above), led off the show with a fiery video message. He said, in short, "Black people in this country have suffered enough. Racism in America will no longer be accepted or tolerated. Our heroes and ancestors have died fighting for social justice and equality, and we must carry on that fight. We are no longer enslaved. We are free and must make change now."

Render told black Americans to refuse to sit back and watch their community suffer from lack of resources, poverty and poor education. As members of this community, they will "not sit back and watch our mothers, fathers, sons and daughters be viciously murdered in the street by corrupt law enforcement or for jogging in a white neighborhood. We will not stand for this, whole world is watching black people, let your voices be heard. We as a people will not take this any more.

"America, you will show us the respect we deserve," Render continued. "We will be treated as equal citizens regardless of our skin color. You will not continue to steal our culture for profit while not acknowledging our achievements and contribution. ..."

There isn't a sport on earth that I would watch if it came with a lecture.

Bite me.

Popovich has gone further off the rails since he lost his wife to cancer last year. Really sad, San Antonio loved the guy’s quirkiness and high standards for years. He said he’d retire when Timmy did - he should have.

This TOS episode is the first thing I thought of when I saw the title.

Gorn : “I weary of the chase. Wait for me. I shall be merciful and quick.”

Professional spectator sports. Participation sports on the other hand are open for business.

Popovich has always been a jerk. Quite possible that he is a communist.

He was a Russian linguist on AD with the Air Force, but I don’t think that increases the odds...

“I will point out that the blacks do this too, and ... “

Pointing out other lunacy doesn’t make any lunacy easier to comprehend.

All true-but...”That said, yes, it is true that many many of us/our ancestors or immediate relatives came here from horrendous oppression.”

And when we arrived, we didn't have billions thrown at us for a leg up. I'm certain that racism exists globally, and in the US it's probably no different and hardly the worst that occurs.

Minorities here have greater opportunities, better treatment and a favored status in lending, education, employment, medical attention, court rooms, etc.

After 40+ years of affirmative action... it ought to be way different even given the claim of racism. Hell-the man I'm supposed to have married wouldn't go through with it because his family felt that I was educated far above my place in life and I have too many letters in my last name. THAT kind of bourgeois xenophobia ain't ever gonna die. Those country club jerks will be having babies with white hair and pink eyes before they ever get off dead center about 'outsiders'. It's just people and people STINK, everywhere!! Get over it!.

I didn't sit down and CRY about something that will never change. I know myself that there are places I will NEVER be accepted... so what!

Right-I got myself out of that when he overlooked their disrespect for HIM because me.

I never cared and still don’t care about places and people where I am not welcome. I also don’t believe it’s ‘racism’.

However, I was younger then so it took some doing to wrap my head around the fact that it wasn’t about ME...but rather, about them.

You learn your lessons in life that way... but it doesn’t mean you’re allowed to put a brick through a window over fundamental and immutable facts of life.
