Ex-New York assembly speaker Sheldon Silver sentenced to 6 1/2 years

Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was sentenced Monday to 6 1/2 years in prison in the corruption case that drove him from power as a judge said she hoped to “send a message to Albany.”

U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni sentenced Silver, 76, for the third time, acknowledging that a man who was once one of the three most powerful state officials came closer than ever before to properly expressing remorse.

But she said it remained unclear as to whether “he really gets it,” and she shaved only six months off the seven-year prison sentence she announced in 2018, ignoring claims by Silver’s defense lawyer that he could die if he contracts COVID-19 in prison. She also fined him $1 million.

“This was corruption pure and simple,” Caproni said.

She said she hoped the sentence was “long enough to send a message to Albany,” though she added that the 17 to 22 years in prison called for by federal sentencing guidelines was “draconian.” Caproni said Silver must report to prison Aug. 26.

Caproni should have followed the fed guidelines and given Silver 22 years.

This is a time in which all sorts of factions, both inside and outside of government, are at war with the United States. Therefore, it would behoove all magistrates in all US states and territories to sentence anybody convicted of any crime, regardless of political affiliation or corporate/government connections, to the maximum penalty possible. That would send a serious message to both the rioters and their corrupt enablers, and dampen enthusiasm for crime in general.

So Silver would die in jail. Boo hoo.

He should have been, along with the rest of the corrupt dem politicians.

Unfortunately, he was allowed to do his damage while in office and NYS is left dealing with the consequences of that.

It took long enough to finally get him convicted and sentenced. Since it’s Federal charges, Cuomo can’t do anything for him. And I’ll laugh if the dumb ass approaches President Trump for clemency/pardon.

“So Silver would die in jail.”

He would be likely to get a “compassionate” release/commutation due to illness and go on to live another Ginsburg.

He should have gotten 60 years and been placed in a jail cell between Cuomo and Hillary. Better yet, all three in the same jail cell. Wouldn’t that be a hoot to watch.

6.5 at Otisville. Hard time. He will probably have to spend the night there on occasion.
