Hagia Sophia mosaics will be covered with curtains during prayers: Turkish presidential spokesman

Mosaics depicting Christian figures in Istanbul’s ancient Hagia Sophia will be covered with curtains during Muslim prayers, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Sunday, as work to prepare the building for use as a mosque continues.

Hagia Sophia dates back to the sixth century and has a history as both a church and a mosque before it was turned into a museum.

In an interview with broadcaster NTV, Kalin said some mosaics of Mary and Gabriel that are positioned in the direction of Qiblah, where Muslims face during prayer, would be covered with curtains.

He said other mosaics of Jesus and other Christian figures did not pose an obstacle for Muslim prayers because they are not located in the direction of Qiblah. But he did not say whether they would remain uncovered at all times.

Okay, Show of hands.

Who thinks that covering the mosaics over will satisfy the Mohamedans?

Pertinent point.

The mosaics reveal that the building was a cathedral long before the Muslims conquered Turkey.

The mosaics reveal the true owners of the cathedral.

They also reveal what has been true of Islam for over 1400 years. They see, they attack, they conquer, they destroy, they dominate, they seize churches and turn them into mosques.

If there is anything of value in the mosaics (like gems or precious metals) they will be looted and destroyed.

If not, Muslims will probably deface or obliterate the images as sacrilege within their mosque.

The curtains will only hide the crime. So yes, the curtains will stay up.

Any Muslim crossing my property must be saran-wrapped and covered by a curtain.

I made this comment on another post. You know that stupid "Coexist" bumper sticker? The Libs love it. Well, here is a golden opportunity for the Muslims to 'coexist". The cathedral has significance for Christians. Why not keep it a museum and celebrate the heritage of groups that aren't Muslim?

Muslims have no interest in coexistence...

Curtains is somewhat better than the plaster that covered the mosaics for centuries.

I remember touring St. Sophia in 1953. The mosaics had not long been uncovered then. They had been plastered over by the Ottomans when the building was converted for use as a mosque. They were uncovered and Sophia repurposed as a museum when Turkiye was looking for tourist income.

They’d been plastered over for centuries when a note on its door, personally signed by Attaturk converted it overnight from an active mosque to a closed museum in 1931. Then he ordered the mosaics uncovered and restored. Given time Erdogan will plaster back over them or worse. The best hope for avoiding that is all the fairly recently sorted out evidence showing that the standard story of Mo and his book is a quite late invention. The truth might be able to win out. The internet has it and young internet savvy Muslims may be exposed to it, But the power backing the myth is immense.

So what’s your point?

You can advocate for taking it back. But they took it in 1453.

It’s admirable that they defend their faith. Why don’t Christians do the same?

“I want Constantinople back”

First, you should want Christians to burn with righteous indignation and band together to reverse the Muslim conquests.

If you don’t get that, Notre Dame and Westminster Abbey will be mosques before Hagia Sophia is a cathedral.

“Muslims have no interest in coexistence.”

And why should they? Their devotion to their faith is admirable.

Their devotion to their faith is admirable.

But their disdain for the infidel is reprehensible.
