As with legions of others in his generation, my nephew has been brainwashed by years of less-than- honest educators. When it comes to U.S. history, he knows precious little about the Constitution and proclaimed that he “doesn’t care much about the Constitution,” which actually protects him every day.
He claims that it is an old document and that while some parts of the Constitution might be good, “some parts are awful.” In a vigorous email exchange, when I asked him to identify an awful part, he took a long time to reply. Then he referred to slaves in the South being counted as 3/5th in voting – an issue which many people routinely misunderstand.
200 Years of Getting it Wrong
In yesteryear, as today, states with greater populations were allotted more representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives. Southern states wanted all slaves to be counted, but still to be treated as slaves, and not allowed to vote.
Combining resident white voters and resident slave non-voters would give pro slave states more representatives in Congress and thus more power to perpetuate slavery. Anything that the North could do to reduce the head count of slaves diminished the power of the pro slavery lobby. Ergo, the compromise to reduce the slave head count to 3/5th was an anti-slavery move.
The measure was not introduced to degrade the slaves as if they were 3/5th human. They were already degraded; they were slaves, for crying out loud! As Glenn Beck describes this situation in his book, Arguing with Idiots, northern states regarded the compromise as the only way to eventually end slavery. To be clear: 3/5ths of a person was not the value of a slave's life. It was the value counted in the U.S. Census.
A man named Gouverneur Morris assisted James Madison in drafting the provision. Morris was a contributing author to large sections of the Constitution. He described slavery as "a nefarious institution, the curse of heaven on states where it prevailed." In fact, Morris opposed the 3/5th compromise because he felt that it would enable the southern states enough representation to indefinitely maintain slavery. He believed that 1/40,000 was a more equitable measure for census purposes.
Slowly and Carefully
The 3/5th compromise represented a forward-thinking act by the anti-slavery faction to keep slaveholding states from wielding too much power. Still, my nephew and others who view the U.S. Constitution with contempt, refuse to understand the truth. Even when you carefully explain the scenario to them, the next day they revert to their reflective notion that the provision was passed to degrade slaves and that the U.S. Constitution is a piece of crap. How can one find common ground with such people?
If only my nephew were an isolated case. He's part of a generation that simply has no idea about America's contribution to the world, past and present. Unduly influenced by teachers and professors on a mission to propagate their Leftist views,
my nephew has little if any objectivity when it comes to assessing the parts played by nations throughout the world. He doesn't know that the UK and the U.S. were the global leaders in ending the slave trade.
He doesn't know that Communism is responsible for 104 million deaths from
1917 to the present. Most amazingly, he doesn't know that every day people from around the globe risk everything they have to make it to the U.S., while virtually no one wants to leave.
The Brainwashed Generation Can Escape
Is he and his generation so far gone that they cannot be retrieved? That would be a shame. Fortunately, encouraging signs increasingly appear on the horizon. Brandon Straka, a gay man, realized that the mainstream media was feeding a non-stop series of lies to him. “Once upon a time, I was a liberal,” Straka said in 2018 to TV host Jeanine Pirro.
“For years now,” he told Pirro, “I have watched as the Left has devolved into intolerant, inflexible, illogical, hateful, misguided, ill-informed, un-American, hypocritical, menacing, callous, ignorant, narrow-minded and, at times, blatantly fascistic behavior and rhetoric.” Ultimately, Straka created #Walkaway helping thousands of followers to see the light.
Other people have launched other movements. Hope is on the horizon. My nephew might be redeemable.
All that needs to be explained is that the slavery parts were changed.
The beauty of the concept behind the document is that if enough people want to change it—they can. And they have.
Our children have been specifically targeted for a century by our pubic schools, news, media, churches and now social media.
We had John Deweys early 1900s Progressive (Marxist) anti-home schooling influence, followed by The Frankfurt Schools mid-1900s social Marxist plan for children, then Hollywoods 1950s communist influences, then NEAs No God push in our schools.
Then, the 1960s CPUSA push of college youts for war protests, drug use and wanton fornication, then the 1980s sitcoms ridiculing parents, then the 1990s queer push, then the 2000s self-esteem facade.
Now MSM, SJW groups and social media are feeding their ignorance and arrogance.
Sorry, Im only ready to shoot his nephew.
Im done talking.
Brainwashed? Try brain dead...
You’re absolutely right.
And the parents have acquiesced to the "brainwashing" since at least the 1950's. Not just allowed, but ignored and often condoned. If parents don't accept responsibility for what their kids are being taught, others will fill that gap. In the United States, communists have filled that gap.
Let them wallow in their participation trophies and coming horror.
These spoiled children don’t realize how lucky they were to be born in America. They couldn’t survive in the communist countries they love. Their protests would be met with tanks in their communist state. I have no use for people who are too stupid to recognize how lucky they are. They will run home crying to mommy when they start the Civil War they’ve been pushing for.
I agree. I no longer have the conversations. I think it has literally been years since I spoke with a Leftist who "listened", who "considered MY viewpoint", who actually had any "facts" to use in a discussion.
I've been harangued for years. I'm stupid. I know nothing. I'm a racist. They don't need to listen to a word I say. They already know I'm wrong about everything. They just want to screech at me and demand that I agree that they are right about how hateful I am.
Im done talking.

Ever try to tell a Lefty something , HELLO WALL
I hate to break it to you but the argument over counting/not counting slaves as part of the population when it came to apportioning US Representatives had nothing to with “perpetuating slavery”. Practically every state still had slavery when the constitution was written and ratified.
The argument was really over money. The Southern states were richer being the major exporters of lucrative cash crops. They wanted lower tariffs, a more modest federal government budget and they wanted to keep corporate subsidies and special favors to a minimum. The Northern states being poorer and not having a first mover (thus economies of scale) advantage when it came to industrialization, wanted high protective tariffs and lots of federal subsidies (paid for by the Southern states of course) for corporations and subsidies for infrastructure projects.
Though poorer, the Northern states had more people. As a means of protecting themselves from having Northerners simply vote themselves Southerners’ money, the Southern states wanted to count all the slaves to give themselves more representatives in the House. The Northern states of course did not want them counted at all. 3/5ths was the compromise.
And don’t forget to point out to him that not making any deal with those states was not an option either. The colonies only had the barest chance against England and had they made no deal at all, they would easily been picked off by the British army, state by state... a deal had to be made or no USA would exist.
Imagine if had we had been fully prepared, fully built-up, fully armed and on alert, ready to rock & roll on 12/7/41...
I know many Boomers that are well-prepared, well-armed, have seen and heard quite enough b.s., and are ready to rock & roll.
Participation trophy winners, meet very pissed off patriots.
Do D’rats really want the results?
I had the same exchange with one of my nephews. He spent a ridiculous amount of borrowed money to get history degrees from an expensive Jesuit school and now works as a government school teacher. I told him if that was what he was taught he should ask for his money back and if that was what he was teaching he should be ashamed of himself.
A light rinse would do.
Why bother? Let ‘em self-destruct. It’s like the Black Plague. Those who survived were rich and lucky.
Hunger is the great teacher.
